Windows phone won't update (error 801812c1)

K, I'm at the end of my rope with this fucking thing. I've had this phone for over a year now and I've never been able to update it once.

I have a HTC Radar Windows 7 Phone. There is a common error when trying to update with the Zune software - the update hangs on step 6 "restarting your phone". After some time, Zune gives me an error message (801812c1) which tells me that I need a driver updated for the phone to update.

The official windows phone troubleshooting guide on Microsoft's website tells me that I need to update the driver. However, device manager shows no conflicts and tells me that my driver is up to date, there is nothing new or different for it to download.

It also advises that I put the phone into "connect to PC" mode manually. I actually don't know how to put the HTC radar into "connect to PC" mode. Powering it off, then turning it back on again and holding the camera button down does not seem to work on the Radar. I've tried googling how to manually put the damn thing in pc connect mode but so far haven't found anything.

Additional info: I'm running Windows XP SP3 on my PC. Zune software is up to date. Phone connects to PC through USB cable with no problems - I can load and offload pictures and music and shit to it with no problems whatsoever. It's only the update it rejects.

Has anyone else had this problem? This shit is so stupid D: (and no, a windows phone was not my choice, I would have preferred a droid). Please let me know if you know how to fix it because I've tried everything I know to do.


Edit: Okay, this shit is even stupider than I thought. I decided to try one more thing which I didn't think would work, which was to reinstall the driver. Well, that didn't work while the phone wasn't updating (gave me the same driver).

So I tried updating the driver while the phone was updating, stuck on step 6. Interestingly enough, while Zune was updating the phone, the driver changed from being named HTC Radar 4G to being named Omega (I assume this is a samsung phone or something), and indicated a conflict or problem. So I updated from there and it installed something from Zune and the update finished with no problems.

Here's the kicker though: After the phone finished updating, the driver reverted back to being called HTC Radar 4G. Zune then immediately attempted to install another update to the phone (even though they're supposed to be cumulative, whatever), and I got the same error message as the screenshot above. And my phone is still indicating that there are updates to be installed.

I just...I don't even.

Unfortunately Windows Phone isn't that popular on these forums... or anywhere for that matter. I was only able to find two so-so solutions from different forums:

Absolutley... The Problem I assume is: After rebooting Windows 7 detects the Optimus 7 as "Windows Mobile" and beginns to search for a predefined Driverplace on the phone... You get the Error, which is explained in the Text above the failure Code, "phone in wrong Connection mode" (yeah its detected as a normal device and not as a Windows phone 7 By (driver search Starts not zune) So just wait for it to fail find driver on the phone or on Windows update... Then you get a read cross on the driver search , the device is nie called "Zune" Close this window, let your phone connected and restart the update process... IT Works fine... sorry for the spelling im fighting against my phone, which thinks i m writing German... For questions you'll find me on Twitter #florianstutz

Thanks so much for checking this so thoroughly

Most of the solutions here are not applicable to me, but I'll keep trying ones I haven't tried yet in those links.

I know Windows phones aren't popular, I think not being able to update the damn thing probably isn't very helpful to Microsoft's case in that regard XD
