what router do you use? suggestions for a router? moving in a month

I assume D-link and linksys are still decent?

looking for a solid wifi connection but will be wiring 2 computers directly to it. I'd like to stay within the $100-$160 range or less

I tried looking into some things to look for, saw some 802-11n designation or whatnot but it seems like any new one will have that or the less common 802-11ac designation (didn't look at the date it was written so maybe things have changed)

Get anything that buffalo makes. Rock solid stuff! Was buying a new linksys router every 6 months right after the warranty went out. Switched to a Buffalo and haven't had any problems since. Plus! It ships with DD-WRT for the OS, which is fantastic.

That router is good but if you do lots of lan transwer the 100mbps lan is meh

I use an ASUS RT-N66U router and it's fantastic. Gigabit Ethernet, dual band WiFi (a/b/g/n), guest WiFi, and it gets even better with Tomato (Shibby flavor) or DD-WRT firmware installed.

Dual band is not a waste, especially if you live in a crowded (WiFi channel-wise) area. Basic D-Link firmware is nowhere near as featureful as DD-WRT or Tomato, either.

Dual band is not a waste, especially if you live in a crowded (WiFi channel-wise) area. Basic D-Link firmware is nowhere near as featureful as DD-WRT or Tomato, either.

And yeah, I agree DD-WRT has tons more features but the main benefit of using DD-WRT, as a casual end user, is to setup QoS & VPN.

I have the WZR-600DHP version of this and it just acts up all the time. I can't get a stable wireless connection half the time and have to reboot it at least one or two times a week. I really wanted to like it because of all the feature it has, but it just isn't very reliable for me.

I'm not referring to the number of people connecting to the router; I'm talking about the number of wireless devices in the surrounding area. More access points (and other 2.4GHz devices) leads to channel crowding and diminished signal quality and speeds. I'd recommend reading this article for the pros and cons of dual band.

I used the RT-N16 prior to the RT-N66U. I'll second it as an excellent router if you only need single band WiFi.

Lots of devices share the 2.4 ghz band, so if your router isn't dual band you might experience some issues. It was really annoying to have the WiFi go out every time someone turned on the microwave. I've got a
Linksys E2500 and it works nicely even without putting DD-WRT on it.

Presumably for phones, laptops, etc. There's still lots of things that don't support 5 ghz, and 2.4 ghz sucks for devices that can use 5 ghz.

Comes with a usb drive that helps connect you step by step.
Sets up a password which is easy to remember.
After you've connected on your phone, if you reset (unplug/power out) modem/router, just go into your phone browser, the router page should show up and you just put in the pass.
Made my life much easier with my mother and sister.

It's supported and requires no additional activation.

she has a laptop and uses the wifi connection, she doesn't hardwire it for whatever reason, I'd use my phone on wifi to save data
