iPad stuck in recovery loop?

My bf has an iPad2.... He jailbroke it a long time ago, but yesterday he removed that stuff and tried to update it.... and it is not working out. Here's what he said is happening:

I wanted to update my iPad 2 from 5.1.1 to the newest firmware but am now stuck in a recovery loop.

I've tried TinyUmbrella's exit recovery feature, and that didn't work; it simply booted the ipad back into a blank screen, then the recovery screen pops up again and a new Recovery Device number pops up on the left of TinyUmbrella's UI. This has happened every time I've tried to do this, with more and more numbers popping into the pane on the left.

In iTunes, I'm getting "the ipad could not be restored an unknown error occurred (21)" messages after attempting to do a full system restore. I've assured that my hosts file is commented out so gs. apple. com/ doesn't point to Cydia as well ask flushed my DNS.

I also cannot switch the ipad off by pressing the power + home buttons; the same thing happens here that happens with TinyUmbrella (black screen, then back to recovery).

I'm getting pretty frustrated... I'm currently trying to do a restore through redsn0w, but if that doesn't work I will be pretty much out of ideas.

If anyone here has any suggestions or insights, please let me know.

He'll most likely need to restore through iTunes and then rejailbreak.

He's tried that. It gets to the verifying the update with Apple part, and then craps out and stops. It says "the ipad could not be restored an unknown error occurred (21)" . :/


EDIT: He says "I dont know what I did, but I did it!" Yay?
