Vintage Books has signed Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas and Alloy Entertainment to a two-book deal to publish a new series of stories based on the adult life of the popular character.

The books will be an original mystery series featuring a grown-up Veronica Mars and characters from the series.

The plot will pick up where events of the forthcoming Veronica Mars movie, slated for a 2014 release, end. Publication of the first book will be timed to the release of the movie and will likely arrive in spring 2014. Thomas will develop and co-write the series.

"I started my career as a novelist. Veronica Mars was first imagined as a novel. I'm thrilled that I'm going to get the opportunity to continue telling Veronica Mars stories in a form I've loved and missed," said the writer-director, whose other credits include cult hit Party Down and work on 90210 and Dawson's Creek.

The Veronica Mars movie drew widespread attention earlier this year when Thomas' Kickstarter campaign to raise seed money for a feature film version of the 2004-07 TV series raced past its original goal of $2 million in days, raising more than $5 million in total.

Thomas will work with Alloy Entertainment, a division of Warner Bros. Television Group, on the books. Alloy is the company behind the development of such best-selling YA books series as Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

The Veronica Mars books represents something of an inversion of Alloy's usual process, which has been nurturing hit book series and helping turn them into popular TV shows.

The teaming of Thomas' creative flair, Alloy's expertise in developing YA series and Vintage's publishing strength is promising. The book series will stand on its own but will also help cross-promote the movie and could also serve as a bridge to a potential movie sequel.

Vintage editor Andrea Robinson expressed enthusiasm for the project: "Veronica Mars has always been a one-of-a-kind character, and, as a longtime fan of the series, I've always thought there is an immense amount of story left to be told. Our goal for the book series is to appeal to fans of the show, but also to appeal to mystery readers and lovers of series featuring strong, intriguing female protagonists. Veronica Mars is a contemporary update to the tradition of noir crime fiction that was established by Vintage's Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, so it's exciting that we'll also publish her here."

The "Veronica Mars" movie is heading to theaters a lot sooner than initially thought. In an announcement on the project's Kickstarter and via EW, creator Rob Thomas said that the project will be released on March 14, 2014, which is the one-year anniversary of the kickoff to the project.

"Warner Bros. had this date circled for quite some time and hoped it would stay open," Thomas told EW. "Luckily, no other teen detective movie decided to open in the middle of March."

The Kickstarter for "Veronica Mars" raised a whopping $5.7 million for Kristen Bell and friends to return to the detective drama. It was shot in 23 days this summer and was originally intended to be a limited release and for online viewing.

The synopsis is as follows: Veronica returns to her hometown of Neptune, Calif., after 10 years away to aid former flame Logan (Jason Dohring), who has been accused of killing his pop star girlfriend. Enrico Colantoni, Tina Majorino, Percy Daggs III, Francis Capra, Ryan Hansen and Chris Lowell are returning, too.

“There are smart ways to do a movie of this size — and we chose none of them,” Thomas said in his interview. “We are a low budget movie with big set pieces and 60 speaking roles. A murder mystery in a house would have been more cost effective. But I think we have managed to pull it off.”

Got home from seeing this. It's worth the rental/trip to the cinema for it. For what they were able to do for $6 million for a really well written movie is quite impressive.

Yea there were a few things that were thrown in there for the sake of fan service that were Plot C and D devices to catch up with the crew, but it didn't detract much from the overall film.

<3 Kristen Bell, probably one of my first celebrity crushes back when this aired 10 years ago. Rob Thomas and Bell nailed Veronica's character down to a T. That good writing/scripting reminded me so much of Season 1, the best season I think most people agree.

i know they're carrying on the story with a series of books, but I'd love for this to do well enough for a sequel or netflix to pick it up in some capacity

Movie was great worst part was when it ends you feel like there really should be a continuation of the series. Would love for netflix to pick this up and run with it.

I loved the part where Leo says he could have sworn Veronica was with the FBI. It was a great shout out for the fans for the 4th season pitch that never was.

They had a few things like that in there, I also enjoyed the hellmouth reference.

it can be a bit hard to sell because it sounds kind of dumb out loud, but it's a noir-y show in which Kristen Bell plays the daughter of a private investigator, and gets involved with doing her own detective work. It's not as Nancy Drew as it sounds, I swear. From the guy who did Party Down if you've seen that, writing is sharp, it's pretty smart and funny, not afraid to get kind of dark.

"I would just do just about anything," Bell told us. "It would great to do a franchise of movies, we have a bit more creativity in film than we do on television. But if one day it comes back as some sort of a series, I would be involved as well."

And Thomas has even more ambitious ideas in mind.

"Big picture, I feel like Nancy Drew had a good 70 year run, and I would like to replace her," Thomas joked. "Honestly, I hope on some level, dream of dreams that Veronica would become an iconic fictional detective, and she could be spun off in any number of ways."

In fact, Thomas is spinning off "Veronica Mars" into a series of novels starting with "The Ten Thousand Dollar Tan Line" on March 25. The book picks up right after the movie, and if everything goes well could be the launching pad for the next movie, as well.

"The novels that we're doing, those could very well end up being future 'Veronica Mars' plots," Thomas continued. "I'm really taking care with the plotting of those, and I'm going to try and make it a continuous universe. So those novels don't exist in some parallel universe, but in Veronica's timeline."

Thomas added that he hopes "Veronica Mars" becomes a "mini Bond franchise," releasing a new film every two or three years, though not for $100 million like the "Bond" films.

"The affordable franchise, is what I'd like to be," Thomas quipped.

Bell meanwhile ultimately leaves the decision up to the people who revived the show in the first place.

"I would want to know what the fans want, to be honest," Bell said. "I don't say that insincerely. As an artist, you want to do things that your audience likes and wants and appreciates and gets excited about."

And on the other end of the spectrum, actor Chris Lowell has a completely different idea on where his character should go next.

"Veronica Mars and Piz in space," Lowell joked. "Why are we even talking about this? Piz in space. I mean, that's it. Who's not going to see that movie?"

"Veronica Mars" is now in theaters.
