In boston we pretend we're going to the city to watch the parade and then commence day drinking at a bar and generally get too drunk and miss the parade.

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated nationwide in the United States, but I think it's more an excuse to drink and pretend you're Irish than actually observing some kind of tradition. So you'll just find a bunch of rowdy Americans drinking green beer and eating corned beef and hash, lol.
ya, but he wasn't asking about such and so i had to forgo the advice. the place like 2 blocks south of kells is actually better because kells is packed on st paddys plus any club nearby really.

g/f wants to go to one of the two parades downtown...fuck that, just hitting up my favorite Irish bar for brunch and taking it easy.

also cultural insensitivity be damned, anyone who doesn't like corned beef is out of their goddamn mind

Usually I go to Vaughan's in Jefferson Park, small, cozy, actual off-the-boat Irish people, close to the Blue Line stop so you can get shitty without driving, and pretty killer food. Their curry fries appetizer is insanely good.

There's one on the north side in Lakeview as well.

Why not cook some corned beef at home, while getting drunk? Cheaper and the food is always better.

Usually it isn't, part of the reason we go there, though we usually go at like noon instead of at night. The Lakeview one is by Wrigleyville so probably more likely to have the bro contingent sporting green Cubs shirts and drinking Miller Lite.

My favorite meal is irish breakfast or bangers and mash over corned beef. (Is corned beef even an irish dish?)

Corned beef and cabbage is not an authentic Irish dish at all(it does have history with Irish-Americans, but not in actual Ireland), it's just really fucking good.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

I actually have no idea what any of ye are saying when ye say Corned Beef and Cabbage. We eat corned beef as a 'cold cut' sandwich filler, like, sliced ham etc. Pretty great, but Ive only ever had it cold.

The 'X+Cabbage' meal we'd be familiar with would be Bacon and Cabbage, which would be a big slab of a particular type of ham (I cant rememeber it for the life of me).. I grew up on that shit.

In regards to NYC. Fuck this noise about the people who organise (apparently, some organisation called the ancient order of hibernians?) the parade.
They firstly have moved the parade to Saturday for religious purposes, which I cant understand because in Ireland we still celebrate it on Sunday and the whole country is Catholic-crazy.

Secondly, apparently they went to great lengths to ban people from the parade, http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisf...t-patricks-day [Spoiler: Its those gays]

Is there some process within first and second generation immigrants trying to replicate what they think it should be, but ultimately bastardizing it?

Essentially it's the same, back a million billion years ago when the Irish came in great numbers, bacon was very expensive but beef was not(especially in Chicago) so they started curing the beef similar to how they would the pork bellies for the bacon; so around here it's kinda just replaced the bacon for the last hundred some-odd years.

Welcome to Murica where we take days like Paddy's day and Octoberfest, and just turn them in to marketable ventures where actual tradition doesnt matter.
