Tubby Smith Fired By Minnesota After Best Season With The Team

College basketball’s head coaches always appear to be on the hunt for longer, richer contracts from whatever school willing to hand one out. But as Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith learned today, big contracts come with even bigger expectations, and a failure to meet them is likely to leave a coach looking for new work.

Smith was fired earlier today following six seasons as head coach of the Golden Gophers. This year was actually a relatively successful one for Smith, who won his first NCAA Tournament game as Minnesota’s coach with an 83-63 drubbing of the sixth-seeded UCLA Bruins.

The victory over UCLA netted Smith a $150,000 bonus, but the rich postseason payouts ended there as Minnesota was knocked off by Florida in the following round. That bonus was on top of an annual salary in the neighborhood of $2 million, which Minnesota seems to feel is far too much for a coach who has failed to find postseason success year after year.

It certainly doesn’t look any better when Andy Enfield, head coach of tournament darling Florida Gulf Coast, will receive not much more than $150,000 in total annual salary. His team is headed to the Sweet 16.

And Minnesota is a school concerned with tournament success. That $150,000 bonus for making the round of 32 is just the first hint. Had Smith won a second tournament game he would have automatically earned an additional contract year plus a $200,000 payout. Had he gone all the way, Minnesota would have paid him a total $2.75 million in the form of postseason bonuses.

Now the school will spend around $2.5 million to buy out the four years remaining on the disappointing coach’s contract. The Big Ten program has some serious resources at its disposal – Minnesota was the sport’s tenth-most profitable team last year with more than $11 million in operating income – so it can afford to cut those ties.

And Smith will undoubtedly land on his feet, whether he keeps coaching or tries out another career line like TV broadcasting. Plus it’s hard to feel bad for the man about to get paid $2.5 million to not work.
