Capcom announces new Strider game, from Double Helix

A new Strider—or possibly a high-definition update—may be in development for digital platforms.

An image of a new Strider box art was discovered on the official Xbox website. It’s since been removed.

Adding more fuel to the fire, a new achievement featuring an image of series protagonist Strider Hiryu also popped up on the Steam registry.

Capcom is announcing two new games at PAX East in Boston on Friday. Perhaps this new Strider is one of them?

Capcom Announces Strider for PS4 and Xbox One

Today, at the World of Capcom panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Capcom Senior Producer Andrew Szymanski announced an all new Strider developed by Double Helix for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC!

Originally released in 1989, Strider remains one of Capcom’s most enduring franchises. The game tells the story of Hiryu, the youngest ever “Super A” ranked agent of an elite corps known as the Striders. Strider Hiryu receives orders to assassinate Grandmaster Meio, supreme dictator of Earth, who has plunged humanity into a dystopian dark age.

Since the original release, Strider Hiryu has battled through multiple sequels, and appears as a playable character in Capcom’s Marvel vs. Capcom series of fighting games, most recently Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, released in 2011. Strider is a consistent fan favorite for Capcom, always ranked at the top of fan polls as a character in high demand to return in his own game.

Part of Strider’s enduring appeal has been blazing fast gameplay, married with deep environment traversal options. For the new game, Double Helix and our partner team in Osaka, Japan, concentrated on an ultra-responsive control system, with incredibly satisfying combat options in every traversal context—standing, running, wall climbing, hanging, aerial and more.

New to the franchise is the massive interconnected world of Kazakh City which players can explore in any direction they choose. The traditional level structure has been replaced with a retraceable world and a deep ability upgrade system which enables Hiryu to build more power and abilities to penetrate ever deeper into the dystopian adventure.

Double Helix is thrilled to be working with some of the original Strider creative leaders from Capcom’s Osaka production offices to bring another fan favorite franchise back to life!

Looks all right.

Let's hope they get rid of the unavoidable hits. Nothing less ninjalike that face-tanking a thousand bullets that do 1hp of damage each and healing it all back from the health drops off random mooks. I wanna dodge enemy attacks not run into them.

Front Mission Evolved also. They're quite a jack of all trades developer for sure, going which and whatever direction a publisher requires, to varying results.

Honestly though, it'd be really hard to fuck up a Strider game, so I'm optimistic for this. I'm assuming this is a digital release? Not seeing any info on that.

neat idea on paper, but with the firm that brought us gems like Battleship: The Movie: The Game at the helm, i have zero faith in this. i guess this is the solution to capcom's "excessive outsourcing" problem: continue to farm your beloved franchises out to shitty third-party dev houses, just not quite as many all at once.

From what I understand DH turned over a lot of employees a bit ago, and their current staff is a lot better than the one that pooped out all of the really terrible games the studio is known for...Strider 2 was legit as fuck, hopefully they do it justice.
