They keep saying that "let it happen naturally", but What the Fuck does This look like? How many polls, protests, rallies, fk forbid Gay Pride Parades, before its substantially evident that the American populace (the ones that matter) want marriage equality. I just find it frustrating that all the major topics, and advancements in both culture and sciences, in this country have to have an upscale battle against the religious institutions plaguing our democracy. Woman's suffrage, Black Civil Rights, Interracial Marriage, Gay Marriage, etc. What's next?

Some people on my Facebook would have you believe that the majority of America is actually very devoutly Christian and wants homosexuals quarantined in Gitmo.

And some on mine truly believe that Jesus was the one that invented marriage, and that all the founding father's were devout Christians who made the Constitution for the sole reason of protecting Christian values.

Oh don't worry, I get that too. I get the "Adam and Steve no thanks" ones, the "Marriage is between a man and a woman because that's how God invented it" ones, and also the "Homosexuality is a sin now excuse me I'm gonna go party and get drunk" ones.

People are disgusting hypocrites that are uneducated, retarded, and fucking ridiculously wrought with double standards.

I just find the suggestion that we have to wait for an overwhelming majority of the public to like gay people insulting, as if our rights were some sort of popularity contest. Our rights already exist, we just have to stop letting bible thumping homophobes dictate law.

I don't even care if the public likes us, i just want straight people to leave us alone and stop getting in our way. Is it really so much to ask for these zealots to mind their own damn businesses? Whether i adopt, marry, or use my genitals to fuck men has nothing to do with them.

No, fuck that. Public opinion doesn't mean shit. The rights of the minority need to be protected no matter how many people are against it.

i think dude was arguing that laws passed through the legislature or popular referendum are seen as more legitimate in the eyes of the peoples and talking heads, whereas those mandated by the judicial branch are often seen as imperial overreach as they come from a small handful of unelected, unaccountable individuals; id est abortion legality being decided by Roe v Wade rather than a more direct form of democracy helps fuel the arguments of anti-abortion activists to this day

i do not agree because one of the prime raisons d'etre of the court is to protect minority rights from an executive + legislative which so often bend to the will of the tyranny of the majority, but bro's argument was more nuanced than gay rights = popularity contest, rather that allowing the change to occur more gradually will engender less resentment and ill-will in the long run, which is likely true

The problem with letting change occur naturally is that it could take many many years and subject minorities to horrible acts from their fellow Americans for entire generations. All because the courts are worried about the perception of imperial overreach? It sounds to me like, if that is the case, the courts are subject to the same popular demand that the executive and legislative branches are.

Yeah kinda negates the whole "courts are there to protect minorities from popular opinion" thing if they don't do anything because they are afraid of backlash from...popular opinion.

fwiw I believe they're legitimately worried about judicial overreach, not of the perception of such.

Colbert had a good segment on potential outcomes of the case. I didn't know that even if DOMA was struck down, a couples marriage wouldn't be legal in a state that didn't recognize gay marriage. And all the new hurdles that would come of that.
