Using as SSD drive in a PS3... thoughts?

Soooo I've been wanting to do this for a while. SSD drives are slightly cheaper now, so I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and do it. My regular PS3 hdd is constantly parking its heads, and the slight click noise it makes drives me fucking crazy. Since SSD drives are 100% silent and a shitload faster, I figured I'd install one of these in my PS3. Has anyone tried this before? I just want to be sure the PS3 is actually fully compatible with these. Planning on getting this one:

People have done it. There are test results to be found online.

In general, load times are much better, but actual gameplay is rarely affected (though the linked article has a handful of examples).

That particular SSD has had questionable results. The 840-pro series is great, but I've heard the 840 series has poor endurance compared to Samsung's usual standard. What Isiolia said is correct as well.

Is there a drive you'd recommend? I was mostly just looking at that one because of it's price, but if theres another one out there that'd be a better choice, I'm all ears.

The 840 is fine if you plan to replace the drive within a few years, but better ones would be Samsung 840-pro, crucial M4, or Intel's 520 series. Still, wouldn't waste an SSD for the PS3 tbh.

Fully compatible? No, it is not. No trim support, for example (not that this is a big deal, since you won't be doing that much writing to it anyway). Regardless, it will certainly allow for much better load times. It's not likely to be worth the price, but if you've got money to spare, then go for it.

Load times actually aren't that much better, since the ps3 is only using a SATA 1 interface iirc. Maybe a second or two shaved off every once and awhile.

I ended up with an ssd lying around a few weeks ago and put it into my ps3. Improvement, yes. But not even remotely worth the cost.

I recall reading that someone tested an 840 series and was able to write about 2 petabytes to it before it went bad. I doubt you'll have to replace it for going bad before you replace it for being out of date.

It's not worth the cost. Just put a bigger 7200rpm drive in.

A few of the modern games that don't have a mandatory install tend to make use of the scratch space the OS sets aside.

As Krandor's said, the interface kinda bottlenecks the drive anyway, so there's not much reason to grab an SSD instead of slapping a 500gb+ 5400RPM drive in there.

I remember the big outcry "nuuh TLC NAND" when the 840 specs went public. As if it would matter in a consumer SSD. Over at xtremesystems, the 840 started to show signs of wear at 393TiB and finally died at 432 TiB written. At 10Gib/day written (average, you have to push to get over that constantly), that would be 43200 days or ~118 years. It's still nothing compared to the 6.22 PiB from the tested 830, which only died because the tester had to power it off. It's also interesting to see, that most SSDs last 5 to 10 times longer than their MWI indicates.

As for Ps3 and SSD, like mentioned, not worth it even if you have the money.

I just hit 2 TB written to my ssd i've had for 3 months. That's 21 GB per day, and i don't even feel like i write that much to it

TLC nand is still much slower though, so i still wouldn't buy it unless it's much cheaper.

SSD would likely reduce heat, which could prolong the life of your PS3. That's the main reason I did not throw a 7200 RPM drive in mine. Creates more heat, and PS3's already have heat issues.

Hard drive isn't physically close to the main heat contributors on the Slim models.

I'm probably just going to wait until the prices drop more on the drives before I go ahead and buy one. Where are you all reading the reviews for the drives? I looked around and the only place I could find a mention of the Samsung 840 failing is on here.
