It means being superficial, or hoping your readers will be superficial and won't ask themselves too many questions. It could be so easy to use time-related instruments, as a writer, to create interesting and fascinating things without fucking up everything.
Why do most people have to fail so badly at it?!
Don't think WotG is even the worst at that tbh, while clearly it suffers from this issue as well.
