Words that mean entirely different things. Semantics, right.

And no, you weren't using it correctly because the topic is of ethnicity yet you brought an immigrant into it.

if you're a 1st generation immigrant in the US you are neither fully american or fully whatever place you came from.
Has no bearing on ethnicity and that is what is being discussed with the lady who says shes black.

Well, if I'm an immigrant I have the ethnicity of wherever I came from, right? Immigrant = some ethnicity? and if I want to "identify" as an american, culturally, that is denied to me by americans and if I want to identify as my ethnicity that is denied to me by my ancestors + people of the same ethnicity not born in the US

I think it had bearing as to what kuro/zoob was talking about

Didn't you talk about it the same way in the thread we're supposed to be using (mods will merge eventually I guess)?

I don't really consider myself to be white or anything but I definitely identify more with white white/American culture than I ever will with Indian culture. This lady, however, considers herself to be black. So I'm wondering where exactly is the line where someone becomes transracial?

I disagree. What you identify as has no damn bearing on anyone else and no one can deny it to you.

Edit: The other thread, I was mostly phrasing it that way to get a sense of where the line is drawn for someone to be transracial. I don't have the answer to that question.

While I agree it has no bearing on anyone else people can and do definitely get up in arms about it and cause all sorts of trouble in true SJW fashion. They call it cultural appropriation and ruin peoples lives, businesses, or get them fired from jobs for identifying as something other than what they think you should identify as.

Edit: As an example just look at the backlash that Raven Simone got when she said she identified as American and that was it on Oprah. I don't remember exactly how she put it but people got really mad about it.

Yeah, I know. But I don't plan on valuing others opinions of where my own personal identity stands anytime soon. Nor should anyone else.

Luckily, as a brown person who is basically white, nobody tries to call me out on cultural appropriation

That is all well and good until people do the whole public shaming thing and get you fired and ruin your life in other ways. I agree with you as much as I can I try not to let others stand in the way of my personal identity. But I also don't identify myself by my physical traits other than my gender I have a penis and I consider myself male.

Truthfully it is a little bit hard for me to understand because my family is such a mix we don't have traditions or any particular culture that we strongly identify with. And my family isn't religious so we kinda just all exist on our own not much holds us together other than our relationships with each other.

For some other people being able to fit into a group and identify as something is very important.

It is scary but these days it really does. I guess if you want to identify as something that people might disagree with keep it to yourself and don't put it out there.

I'm not that paranoid. Although being a minority does give me a certain amount of immunity to the SJW crowd.

But then again, I'm cis straight male so maybe not as much as I think.

Ok, I'll buy that I can identify as whatever I want if I ignore everyone's opinion.

But what's that have to do with me misappropriating immigrant in place of ethnicity?

I'll be the first to admit I was wrong, but you haven't explained it well enough for my ethnic-challenged dumbass to understand

Edit: Also, with regards to ^, isn't this girl in danger of losing her job@ getting a ton of shit for identifying black? (admittedly, she's being really flagrant about it and lied on paper, but if you listen to the interview she never lies)

All I was saying was that being an immigrant doesn't change your ethnicity, only your nationality.

And the girl isn't in danger of anything because of what she identifies as. It's because she is lying about what she was born as, calling her parents liars for saying she was born to white parents, etc etc. Not only does she identify as black, she is claiming that she is physically actually black when all she is doing is artificially darkening her skin tone.

Edit: Oh and I think she got scholarships for being a minority.

Montana Republican: Noah Was 600 Years Old When He Built the Ark, So Why Do Americans Need Retirement?

Speaking at the Montana Bible College in February, Gianforte told students, “There’s nothing in the Bible that talks about retirement. And yet it’s been an accepted concept in our culture today. Nowhere does it say, ‘Well, he was a good and faithful servant, so he went to the beach.’ It doesn’t say that anywhere.”

“The example I think of is Noah,” Gianforte continued. “How old was Noah when he built the Ark? 600. He wasn’t like, cashing Social Security checks. He wasn’t hanging out; he was working. So, I think we have an obligation to work. The role we have in work may change over time, but the concept of retirement is not biblical.”
