Crazy is going to crazy. There is crazy everywhere. Instead of trying to blame people who aren't crazy for the actions of crazy, why not try to fix the crazy?

You may be right. I hate to bring it up again, but the DC Sniper case was an instance of someone who was mentally unbalanced due to brainwashing, indoctrination, whatever you want to call it. And that's just one specific case, there's also the possibility of a chemical imbalance or a host of other psychiatric conditions. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like the US isn't exactly ahead of the curve in recognizing or treating people with mental problems, either before or after they commit crimes.

Of course, you may be wrong. Just because you and I can't understand or rationalize the motives in the Boston Marathon explosions doesn't mean that the person(s) who committed the act are insane, and therefore there's no way of knowing how to "fix the crazy." We just won't know until more information is available.

Most suicide bombers (usually) don't go with anything more than a push switch detonator. Saves time and money for the cause. Seen a few in my time and they're usually very very simple. If they're going after a bigger target, it'll get more intricate in the design like a thermal detonator (dead mans switch) that activates the explosive once skin contact is lost or the body temperature goes down or up by a few degrees. 9 times out of 10 it's booby-trapped with some type of IED or simplex rigging to trip once pressure is released from the trigger. Rule of thumb for us: Shoot them in the head and pray they loose brain function fast enough so they don't activate and jump behind the first solid object you can haul to.

Our brown friends have numerous reasons for wanting to strike blows at the US. Radical Islam wasn't created simply because people were bored. I would never call them crazy so much as I would call them dumb, most of their members and the people they target to join are the kids who are poor, ignorant, etc. They find a cause to believe in and go about their business waging war against their oppressors.

There hasn't been any new information yet though, maybe they'll release bomb makeup and such tomorrow.

You could do this, but it would take more than just strapping it together. It still allows for prevention/signal blocking. Also, GSM GPS can be fairly inaccurate some places or while getting interference from other radio frequencies, buildings, etc.

edit: also, high profile suicide attacks don't leave a lot to chance. the point of the attack is the target, not just to have a bomb go off.

I was at work so unable to listen to this before.

Listening to that ... just wow. I will probably never handle anything like this (though I've handled my fair share of fucked up shit) but they did a bang up job. It's hard to stay calm in this kind of situation. I'm sure you and other first responders are going to hear a lot of gratitude out there, please pass on to your dispatch that they are appreciated too for everything they were dealing with.

It seems hard to believe that the training you get will prepare you for something like this but it does and after it's all over you're just like .... shiiiiiiiit.

so, not sure who all is aware... that's Joe Andruzzi, a former Patriots lineman

He has 3 brothers that are all NYFD, all 3 were first responders at 9/11.

In 2007 he got cancer, after full successful therapy he started a foundation which provides financial support to cancer patients and funding for childhood brain cancer research.

Every year he organizes a team to run Boston in support of the foundation. He was a block or 2 away at the organization's gathering point, and ran over to help when the explosions happened.


Whoever did this, those are the people they want to attack. Fuck this world.

the people this would affect with the timing are primarily the ones running either purely to run, or for some specific cause like that, and of course the people there to support them and cheer them on at the finish... the people actually "racing," or just there to see the race, were done and gone by then; although I'm sure plenty of them were sticking around to support people like that

I completely understand this. And while the US military isnt conscripting children, many of our soldiers share the same qualities you described. Young, poor, and ignorant(particularly regarding racial issues) are the majority of our soldiers when they enter our military, looking for a cause to support.

Absolutely, the difference between the two would be if every school in the US was right wing and the teachers were holy leaders telling kids about the evils of muslims. At age 10 you start going to summer school to make bombs and when able, go to Iraq/Afghanistan (around age 13+) to be a soldier for Allah. It's a bit more sinister, but shares similarities.
