Unfortunately, this dude is going to end up suiciding by cop. With one officer dead, and another in critical condition, the police that find him are not going to go easy on him. I doubt he lives through this, and then we'll never know why other than speculation unless they left a manifest.

This is what I'm thinking as well. With one already dead, the full story will never be told, and with only one remaining, there are a lot of people who will never be satisfied.
