Shiit, I was gonna go into the city tonight but I guess that ain't happening unless they get this 2nd guy.

Also I woke up to my mom telling me theres over 9000 cops there, it said so on the news. I'm assuming CNN got trolled? lol

They're evacuating my campus (again, 60 miles southeast) because a) the dude is registered here and b) what I can only assume is some irrationally nervous nelly called in a suspicious package warning.

But somehow everything was a-ok until we got the news that he went to school here.

This isn't my first time listening to a scanner (I have an old one that gets them sweet unreachable bands) but I am always amazed at how the police/EMS function on so few channels. Do you run squad/station channels on low freq FM that scanners don't pick up? If not then crazy, lol. Running so much data on a few UHF channels, ugh.

I work for the private sector, so my answers won't necessarily be typical. FCC regs just came down that we had to go from wide-band to narrow-band which really fucked up our reception until we got more repeaters, but we use secure channels. To my knowledge, they're not picked up by scanners but I have no earthly idea of the actual frequencies since we label them by what tower they connect to (since we cover from Jacksonville to Saint Petersburg) We run five main frequencies a night, each of which has a back up in case the towers go to shit.

Listening to this scanner it's so odd to me that I don't hear any codes at all. We speak almost entirely in code over the radios, especially when we're actually in contact. Seems so odd to hear plain language on the radios.

- Thursday before 10:20pm A 7-11 in Cambridge is robbed by the men believed to be the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.
- 10:20pm An MIT police officer, Sean Collier, 26, was shot and killed while sitting in his squad car, responding to a report of disturbance in Cambridge.
- 11:30pm An armed carjacking by two men took place in the area of Third Street in Cambridge. The victim was held in the car for approximately a half hour
- 12:00am The carjacking victim was released at a gas station on Memorial Drive in Cambridge. He was not injured. Police immediately began searching for the vehicle involved.

It varies from state to state, but they banned high frequency scanners awhile ago because they could also listen to cordless phones. Some stations switched to these higher frequencies because they couldn't be listened to. (It's not illegal to own the old scanners afaik, they just don't sell them anymore, can be modded though).

Then they started doing Trunking a lot more prevalent and you had to program your shit right to get anything out of it.

Main difference is range like you said (wide/narrow), the change probably happened because you guys are on the ground and don't need fat stacks of range (or can use repeaters). I don't know what civilian aircraft primarily operate on but I'm assuming it's similar to military where they are generally 200-350. It probably has mostly to do with freeing up more channels and getting all agencies/people in the same frequency range.

Was he run over, or exploded? or was it both? I suppose it doesn't really matter.

I'll be honest, I don't even know shit about the technical aspect of any of it. I know that we don't have people listening in on our shit, not sure if that's just because they dgaf or they can't find us.

My question was more aimed at: how the fuck do you operate with every dick on the same channel, it sounds like a clusterfuck all the time when something is happening. It could definitely be more efficient. eg, reporting the twitter on the net.

It's just learning to manage the radios, honestly, I'd imagine big police departments have different districts on different frequencies the same way that we put different sectors on different frequencies, and also because you won't even be able to key in on some frequencies from certain areas due to range from the towers, etc. The most we ever have on one full radio is about 30 guys, and it's just about learning to control the traffic. You can tell when more than one person is trying to key in at the same time and you break into their transmissions and determine who (if anyone) has the priority call. It's not as complicated as it sounds. I remember two years ago being very overwhelmed at the prospect of managing that many people on one radio and now I can easily juggle five frequencies with no problem at off-peak hours and with only minor difficulty at on-peak hours.

I could probably handle the radios fine solo for days, it's adding the fucking phones into the mix that will fuck you right up. I hate those goddamn phones. (Mainly because we we take in calls for service and people who call us are the dumbest forms of life in the universe.) But since we are private and not police dispatch, we don't have separate call takers from dispatchers, we just do everything cause we're baller.
