Handheld versions are reskins with updated rosters

Today, Nintendo announced the release of FIFA 14: Legacy Edition on the 3DS. It’s a game being sold for $39.99 on the Nintendo eShop. And it’s the exact same game as last year’s, except for the updated rosters and team jerseys (or kits, if you want to be European about it).

At the very least, Nintendo is up front about the crap job EA put into this “new game.”

From the press release (bold emphasis ours):

FIFA 14 Legacy Edition delivers unmatched authenticity that reflects the current football season with updated kits and rosters but no updates to gameplay or game modes. It features 30 officially licensed leagues, 50 real-world tournaments, and 500 authentic clubs. Play traditional matches or free your game in epic 5-v-5 street matches with 3D effects. Play as a real-world superstar or re-create yourself. Optional touch screen controls deliver pin-point shooting and passing at your finger-tips.

Last month, we found out that the Vita version of FIFA 14 was also a reskin of the previous year’s game—which itself was a reskin of the game from the year before THAT. From Eurogamer’s interview with EA Sports’ David Rutter at Gamescom:

There will be a Vita version, and it’ll be the same great gameplay[…] It’s the same great gameplay and new kits.

Can crash the XB1 when two controllers are hooked up, EA promises fix by the end of the day

FIFA 14 players have encountered a pair of bugs when playing the Xbox One edition. Publisher EA has issued s blog post on the matter, along with confirmation that an update fix is due today.

EA addressed the issue on the FIFA 14 help page, which explains that the day one update will remedy, “a potential controller bug that Xbox One users may experience when they initially load FIFA 14, and a bootflow issue causing problems to online features.”

The controller bug occurs when two controllers are being used, which are synced to two user profiles. Using controller two to navigate the Xbox One’s bootflow can result a crash at he loading screen. This particular issue will be fixed “shortly after launch.” So not quite ‘day-one’ then. The short-term fix is to use controller one to navigate the game’s bootflow, and only turn on the second pad while at the game’s main menu.

Next, a separate bootflow issue occurs when the Xbox One goes into suspended mode. Once you wake the console up again, you may not be able to access FIFA 14′s online features. You will need to reboot the console to remedy this one.

Manager series will end with FIFA MANAGER 14

Dear Football Fans,

Today I’m writing to tell you that FIFA MANAGER 14 will be the last instalment of the football simulation series marketed by EA SPORTS. This is was a very tough decision, so I want to take the time to explain it.This probably comes as a big disappointment to many of you, and it is understandable that you would ask why.

The football manager genre at this level of sophistication is highly specialised and primarily played in two countries (England and Germany), in which – on top of everything – one game has practically dominated the market in recent years. The niche market and general trend toward online and mobile games were also contributing factors. Moreover, FM had reached a crossroads at which a new engine and/or corresponding online technology would be the only way to give the series a boost. When all these factors were evaluated, it led us to the decision to blow the final whistle.

All of us, the team at Bright Future and our colleagues at EA SPORTS, loved and still love FIFA MANAGER. It’s a game that has captivated many fans over the years, and been our pride and joy since its first instalment FIFA MANAGER 2002 (with Rudi Assauer on the cover). We’ve had Löw and Mourinho on the cover, Felix Magath twice, and many other German and international stars who have lent their expertise to the game. We were also lucky to have a very dedicated community. Your passion and commitment to FIFA MANAGER is unrivalled, and made the series a great joy to work on.

You have our heartfelt gratitude. We hope you’ll keep playing FM as long as possible, and that the fan sites will go all out to expand and improve the game wherever they can. For all your years of support and all your passion for our game, we thank you.

F2P/P2W version, FIFA World, is now available for the PC

FIFA World is a watershed moment in free-to-play. It’s a free FIFA game. It doesn’t cost anything. Pat takes a look.

I know very little about football, but then I’m probably exactly the sort of person EA’s looking to attract with FIFA World. Just out of closed beta, FIFA World is a free version of FIFA 14 for PC. You can download it now from Origin (or directly from the FIFA World site). The controls aren’t apparently quite as refined as FIFA 14, but that’s like saying, “This free iPhone has 10% less battery capacity than this $600 version.” Who cares?

I played the practice match this morning. It’s a FIFA game. For nothing. Check out what happened in the video above. I left it at the default resolution to show you what it looks like without any fiddling. This is on medium graphics settings.

Once this match is over you go straight into a FIFA Ultimate Team set-up, where you’re able to spend real money or in-game currency. We’ll show you a bit of that in the next video.
