Unfortunately not. Saturn's 'surface' temperature ranges from 80-140K ( which IIRC these numbers are based on pressure, since 'surface' on a gas planet? Ask / wait for Miz ). -100F / -73C is closer to 200K, but as you can see Saturn isn't at 100 ( closer to 150 ) even on the C scale. For them to make this faux pas they had to goon the negative and the scale.

Correct. Saturn has no "surface", just different levels of pressure, hence the old "If there were a pool large enough, Saturn would float" adage. Yeah seems someone just made a fubar and forgot the negative

A movie made purely out of carbon monoxide molecules, magnified over 1 million times and manipulated via a scanning tunneling microscope.

Cool as shit. Funny to see that and actually see those ripples are caused by electron displacement of the surface the atoms are resting on.

Posted that in the Youtube thread today. Coolest video I've seen in a while.

    And here's a bonafide photograph of Saturn the other day. I wish I still had a telescope. ; ;

It's it still visible? I have a telephoto lens and I would love to photograph it (or try).

No idea. It's been partly cloudy here the last couple days.

That photo isn't mine. I just decided to post it cause it is well done. From this Photostream:

Neat! I used to take pics like this through my telescope, but this one is gorgeous. I usually head to the observatory on campus and check them out now Having access to it is absolutely amazing.

It's kind of funny, considering so many images of the planets that we see are artificial representations made for greater detail that when you actually look at a real true color image it almost looks fake.

"Come on, the rings can't really look that perfect and even, someone shooped that."

Speaking of temperatures, I saw on history channel once that the moon has craters that get colder than Pluto because of its axis and light never reaching them. Supposedly the coldest (known) place in the solar system.

I'm hoping Niiro was referring to false color images that enable the human eye to see things like Nebulae and Novas in the cosmos. False color imaging are images that are made using the actual colors that that particular element gives off when it is super heated.

Again, I hope that is what was meant lol

Was more referring to displays created from scratch, ie. you're watching [insert science show about space thing] and aside from a few grainy, non-color-enhanced "this was the first image of [thing]" images in the introduction everything else is a 3D CGI mockup to give the viewer a more coherent visual representation of whatever it is that's being talked about.

Then comparing that to the image above which looks like it could have been something hand drawn and copypasted into a random picture of the night sky. We're just not used to seeing the planets as they appear to the naked eye because we almost never do.

Saturn in particular tho is probably the most unusual with the rings, rocky planets have craters and other terrain and Jupiter's got the big red dot, Saturn just looks too "neat" in an image like that.

If I understood what the photographer was trying to say, that's actually two images superimposed as one. The moons were shot separately from Saturn (or there would be obvious motion blur for that length of exposure.

I do really like the hacked/super fast ISO though, it probably produces the best raw film-like digital shots that don't need to be ran through photoshop.

What would that surface be? Isn't that made of atoms too?

Whats good Palin? Long time no see But yes it is, the waves are from the atoms of the copper plating they are resting on.

Hope all is well with you.

    Thanks man you too!

Are the individual atoms of the copper plating harder to see because it's a metal and thus more tightly knit? Needs more magnification?
