For me, I think the first 'shock / wonder' moment I had was seeing Cerenkov radiation for the first time from an operational ( test ) reactor. I had always looked up at the stars and been buried in science / science fiction as far back as I can recall, but I don't think it ever hit as hard as it did until that day.

It's not just about looking up though. It's about looking, period. And it's a mistake we all make.

Just recently they rediscovered the Hula Painted frog ( link ) that had been thought / classified as extinct, from a line several thousands of years preserved.

One of my hugest aggravations with religious people is their purported claims that this realm of existence is horrible and something better awaits them. The same thing applies when people tell me they would rather 'not live forever' because they would 'get bored'. Are you kidding me? It is so amazingly arrogant and shows such boundless self ego. How can you seriously look around and go "Nope, not good enough"?
