"FUCK YOU PIGS" is a foolproof way to get them to not break down your door
lol, i live in a decent sized 5 bedroom house. I am directly beneath the back door, and the front door isn't far either though, and the floors creak a lot (i can hear the cats walking around), so it's impossible for anyone to move at all on the main floor of my house without me knowing. There is an average of 4-5 people home at any given time, and never less than 2, one of which would be on the second floor, so they couldn't even climb in the second floor windows (lol), and there's nearly always someone on the main floor of the house. Oh, and we have a dog that barks incessantly any time someone comes within 10 yards of our house.
Obviously it's not a typical situation, but clearly it's not impossible to be 100% sure no one snuck into a house, at least during the day.
So I take it everybody here is for mandatory DUI checkpoints. Its for the greater good, cops know there are drunk drivers on the road, so they are checking every vehicle to prevent accidents.
Not directed at you specifically. Its just one of those things I've heard from people over the years at various jobs. They hate the cops, and mandatory checkpoints were always one of those "government taking my freedoms" kneejerk reactions. Most likely because they were also ones that already had several DUI's on record.
I wonder if anyone who is complaining about "martial law" or "police state" were even living there? Sounds like a bunch of ambulance chasers trying to get something out of a bad situation.
I saw a little blurb from one of the thousands of tweets during the search for the second suspect that read "All these cops, National Guard, total lockdown, for one guy? Time to start filing my lawsuit paperwork."
Really? Hello dangerous criminal? The combined efforts of well over 30 agencies who responded to this incident and the guy still got away with a rolling perimeter, god knows how many cruisers in pursuit with god knows how many officers and managed to turn that area in to a warzone and it's overkill?
Not going to partake in this whole debate really, since I did participate in said actions being debated.
However I will say that only people in 1 town listened to the shelter order, and that was residents of Watertown MA.
You go into Boston and stores were open, people randomly walking down the street like it was business as normal.
So I live about a mile away from the boat, and before this apartment I lived about 4 blocks from the boat.
As far as I know I wasn't in the immediate search area (just outside it).
Apologize in advance for not reading through a lot of the thread, lots of rhetoric going back and forth and got bored.
Unless you're put in the position you do not know what you will do or how you will react. When I went to sleep (1:30AM Fri), I had just heard about the MIT officer being killed. When I woke up my gf let me know there was a full scale man hunt going on, and the lock down order was in place.
Backing up a bit, a couple months ago during one of the storms we had a statewide driving ban due to expected snowfall. Now, I considered that to be extremely excessive and the government regulating my ability to move. I'm from NH originally, have been in Watertown since I graduated college. I grew up with live free or die. If I feel I'm capable I should be able to drive.
This week was a different scenario. One of the guys suspected of bombing the marathon, on our holiday was practically hiding in my fucking backyard. The way I look at the lockdown, is the police are asking for my help in arresting the suspect. If they had knocked on my door and asked me to wear a target to help find this guy, I would have. Instead they asked us to stay inside, close our blinds and lock our doors. When the police initially lifted the lockdown, I didn't go outside but you can bet I had that fucker's picture up on my phone and my eyes were glued to the street. I'm very thankful that one person went outside and called it in (my house doesn't have a yard to check, but I did check the cars from inside the house).
Regarding the searches. Would I have let a sole police officer knocking on my door? Absolutely not. If there was a group I could see going door to door? Absolutely. It's quite different when this is happening around you. It's hard to explain. I'm not a fan of cops in general. I'm extremely distrustful due to imposters, my GF getting screwed by a cop's "advice" (lies), and my general distrust of people. It's different in this scenario because you know the cops only have ONE objective, the TOWN has ONE objective. Every single person here wanted that guy caught. If the cops showed up to my house today and asked to look around? I'd tell them to get fucked and get a warrant. There's no reason for them to be in my home any longer.
Did I have any of my rights stepped on? Probably. Do I care? No. None of the ways my rights were potentially violated (afaik) are part of mass law and can be used willy nilly whenever the government feels like it. I understand where people are coming from with the Franklin quote about security. Unfortunately people seem to forget he said that in 1775. 1775. That's a long ass time ago when people who formed this country were fighting against an oppressive government (ironically employing many terrorist tactics). The situation this week is a government fighting against a terrorist and imploring it's citizens to act.
Honestly the most inconvenienced I was during the whole lockdown was my cat being super pissed she couldn't look out the windows.
Sorry if it's a bit rambly, quite late and I've been up for a long time.
random poster owns thread, more at 11
the good news is we now have the imperialist government and they employ their own terrorism
related note, given the circumstances, could it at least be argued that someone telling the cops to fuck off is illogical enough to indicate something might be going on and allow the cops to claim probable cause? idk how that all works, obviously on tv they're just like HEY I HEAR SOMEONE SCREAMING FOR HELP LOLZ
God damn i hate you hey.
next donation drive, i'm banning the fuck out of you.
if the person said "i looked in my house and took care to see to it that there was no one who should not be here, please get a warrant if you do not trust me" then I would expect them to follow that rule really... if the person said "fuck off" id say they give them reason and the warrant would be given in like 4 seconds lol
Still why anyone would say no I hardly understand... anything they find on you can not be used anyways as it is with no warrant.
edit:
there is also the little fact that the searching the cops did was of zero good.
1)he was not found by them
2)he was outside their given zone
3)A civilian found him.
I can easly see why some people would be pissed if they entered when told no.
For anyone arguing that Boston was police state for the day..
Spoilered for large
Spoiler: show
Because they bring over milk for families with little children in police states.
you do understand that does nothing for or against the meaning of a police state.... Its nice and all but how does that mean anything outside that the cops where nice to the people. There is nothing in the definition of police state that says the cops have to be dicks and asses. all it says is
state controlled by a political secret police force.
I know it doesn't do anything for the technical definition of the term. But some people are making this situation sound as if the civilians were thrown under the bus and the police just did whatever the hell they wanted to with no regard for the public. It adds a little bit of humanity into it and shows that that wasn't the case.
Don't know why people assume that the police can just accept your word when a manhunt is going on. They have a perimeter that they're searching, they themselves need to be sure it's 100% clear and not base it off some civilians that might be harboring a fugitive.
Also, lol at people who think the guy being just outside the search area matters. Yes guys, the search and manhunt would have been called off if the search yielded nothing by the end of it.
