There's plenty of more interesting things to discuss in this situation than the semantics of what qualifies as a "police state".

This is closer to a police state than protestors getting maced for no apparent reason?

This is misguided anger about privacy, which serves to lessen the arguments in favor of privacy because it fails to acknowledge the reality of emergency.


The simplistic argument of "do you want to be that guy stuck in a basement" really holds a lot of water, be it in this situation or in a tornado. The issue is what is the solution to that, not "OMG PERLEES STAET!!"

A warrant is only needed if they don't have permission. They can search anything you give them permission to without a warrant, and use anything they find against you in court. They're also probably going to make a mess, and not clean anything up, possibly break things, etc. Why would you allow them, unless you had something to gain (like say, you aren't really completely sure someone isn't hiding in your house)?

Just noticed this-- if you clearly state that you don't consent but are not going to stop them, the only thing they could get you for would be whatever they came for.

Please, tell me more about what a police state Watertown was in. It's where I've been for the past several years.

I haven't heard of an instance of anyone around here complaining about our rights being violated. I would actually be very interested to see some of the opinions of people who had their home search and exactly what happened. There is a lot of people transposing their viewpoints onto what they see (myself doing this included). Which is especially true regarding the video link from before. Although below I gave my opinion on the video, I think it's extremely foolish to pass judgement without knowing that person's POV.

And to answer your question about where to draw the line for circumstances. I would say the entire town would fall into that spectrum.

Regarding the video. If you get pulled over and have the cop at your window, you don't start fishing around in your car looking for shit. You could be looking for a weapon and a cop should react accordingly. I don't think the guy was mistreated at all. I think he agreed to let them in and was trying to gesticulate with his hands while he spoke out of habit. If a cop pulling you over is weary of you reaching around in your car, wouldn't you think a police officer in the midst of a manhunt for a potentially armed (potentially with a suicide vest) fugitive who may or may not have had accomplices in the area would be damn sure he would want to see your hands?

The point is not that people feel they lost their rights, its weather or not they did in this case. If each and every house said "yes please come in" without a gun being pointed to their head then all is well.

But if some said "id rather you not come in" and said cops did so anyways(and I bet there are some) then their rights got trampled as did yours. This is not a case of if you think it was right. Its a case of did the cops have the power to do what they did based off the law. plain and simple, how we feel means shit.

I bet I can get you to not say a word if I had a few guys with a just knives at your front door. Now throw in SWAT teams with helicopters and automatic guns in the mix. The people had no shot to say "no". You damn well know what would of happened if they did. The cops where very vocal and demanding from that video. A guy who you can see looks nothing like the kid puts his hands up walks out and then puts his hands down. Did they have to really force his hands up again and scream the hole time?

the demands and shouting could of tipped the damn kid off more then they did good... lol
