Neat back story that helps somewhat with Metal Gear Solid 1, but the originals don't have the same deep plot as the rest. You can start with MGS1 and be perfectly fine.

Even at full price, this is an amazing value and should be in every gamers collection unless they already have all 4 games already.

No, I'd prefer them to redo it properly. At least smooth out all the edges or something. Game looks pretty awful, and the controls could be updated a bit.

I was going to buy the HD collection recently, so this is good news. But I still own 4, so I don't know if I want this. The HD collection might drop in price enough to make that more worth it, we'll see.

Been replaying 4 recently (never got around to BBE before) and in retrospect, honestly, I think it's the worst game in the series. The improved controls (3pv shooting really) are the only thing that make it an improvement over previous games.

There's the joke "MGS4 is the best movie I've ever played" but seriously, the vast majority of the cutscenes are just....fucking awful, boring, redundant, meaningless, lame shit. It's exposition for exposition's sake, saying the same shit 50 different ways for no reason whatsoever. Even after all that there isn't even a really meaningful message behind the game in the end.

I got more emotion out of the 2d codec portraits and fixed faced cutscene models in the original MGS than the crap in 4. Kojima makes great games but when I look back and compare 4 to 1-3 it's like he just got completely lost up his own ass on this one. The man badly needed a goddamn editor.

Going back and watching the late game CSs from 2 (good, meaningful exposition, characters with clear motivation not vague bullshit) puts the lack of purpose behind all the tripe that was 4 in perspective. This bit in particular was brilliant:

Idk maybe it's just me. 4 was a big disappointment in retrospect outside of a few key neat.jpg moments (REX/RAY fight, BB at the end....uh...that's about it actually).

I can see your point on a few things here and there but having recently beat 4 again I still think it is freaking fantastic. Returning to Shadow Moses is so simple yet god damn it sends shivers through my body. The ending as a whole was amazing, even more so once you realize the meaning behind "Here's to You".

Having said that though I'd place the games MGS3>MGS1>MGS4=MGS: PW>MGS2=MGS: PO
