Salary Negotiation Tactics

I have a friend who has been interning for an engineering company for a few years. We both graduate in May and they've been encouraging her to make an offer to come on full time. She offered herself for 45 which is outrageously low, I told her to ask her for 60. She updated her offer and they responded with an offer for 50. I still feel like it's way too low, the average is 58 from what I've read. I was wondering what the best way to handle this is. She's got excellent grades (3.9) and knows a lot about the company and had done a lot for them. I'll be in this situation soon myself so it's good to know.

Also, they want her to do night calls, which are conference calls at 9-10 at night. I feel like expectations like that warrant a much better salary.

Dude 50k just starting out is fantastic, especially straight out of college. You need to understand that you have to get your foot in the door first. I think she would be insane to pass that offer up just coming out of school.

When you are experienced, yes. When you're walking straight out of college, if she doesn't take it, someone else will, and they'll jump on it quick.

Once she gets a few years under her belt, then there will be more wiggle room for negotiations.

Positions like those have great bonuses and usually see a pay raise pretty early. My technician friend started off at 40k, and 2 years later he's at 52k.

this shit isn't really accurate at all for most people especially those just coming out of college
none of that adds up to my salary experience or any of my friends' whose salaries I know

Not sure what state you're in, but I have a friend in mechanical engineering and one in software engineering (lol he went to school for civil engineering and after 2 years couldn't find a job so had to go with this), and they started out at 55k/48k respectively


While it didn't take my mechanical engineering friendly nearly as long to find a job as the other, he still said it fucking sucked trying to get one and he's trying to go somewhere else now that he does have a few years of experience, and is still having trouble finding a new place to work.

Take what you can get, at least in FL

you sound kind of.. overexpectant. it's an AVERAGE starting salary because there is a low end and a high end. sorry to say, dude, but coming out of college is the low end. you have to work your way up if you expect to earn even the average.

58 isn't the overall average, it's the average starting salary for someone without any experience.

either way, if the job's in front of you i'd be very careful about how you play this game. as someone else said.. if you don't take it, someone will. if you like your options and think fighting for the extra 8k is necessary then sure, but 50k out of college is p. sweet if you ask me. was making 30 for a while and happy for it. then again, i have no debt
