Alex Ovechkin played the final two games of the playoffs with a fractured foot, the Washington Capitals announced Thursday.

Ovechkin suffered a hairline fracture in his left foot during Game 6 on Sunday in New York. It most likely happened at the begining of the game, when Ovechkin dove not once but twice to block shots from the Rangers.

It figures the time he goes all out to block a shot -- something he gets criticized for not doing -- he pays a big price with a broken foot. It didn't seem to show very much, which is certainly a tribute to him and hockey players in general. A lot of guys play on such injuries, especially at this time of the year.

The Caps captain has taken some heat for failing to record any goals after Game 1 of their seven-game loss to the Rangers, so perhaps this will quell some of that. Then again, you could argue Ovechkin played better in Games 6 and 7 than he did in Games 3-5. He was a hitting machine in Game 7 and had a couple of good chances but couldn't beat Henrik Lundqvist.

Further, Ovechkin quickly left Washington to join Team Russia at the World Championships and scored a goal in Russia's 8-3 loss to the United States in the quarterfinals.

Don't worry, though. The team was aware of the injury and was OK with him playing. There was no real danger in continuing to play on it; it was probably just a little painful.

I start to wonder if Vokoun is running out of steam. I almost wouldn't mind seeing MAF play a game or two just to make sure Vokoun doesn't completely wear out.
