Also, holy crap. The pens only have 6 players under contract beyond the 2013-2014 season. This could be a very different looking team in a year's time.

28% of the cap committed to just two players, don't bet on them affording any defenseman worth his salt. I know everyone wants the biggest contract ever, especially the Russians, but I'm still kind of surprised Malkin didn't Tom Brady here. Even with taxes/escrow taken into account he's already banked at least $25m the last five years, at 6-7m a year he could have banked another $30m, been set for life, and his team could have afforded to get him some help. I guess I'm just back to the old poor people conundrum where I don't really understand the difference between having $50m and $70m, it all seems to get irrelevant past like 20-30 unless you're into like, 90's Mike Tyson spending, which I don't generally see out of hockey players.

It probably has to do more with ANA signing Perry and Getzlaf. The two of them bring in $16.5. And for only an additional $1.7, you can have Crosby and Malkin, it's really a no brainer. Without the ability to tail off contracts like they did in the old CBA, we are going to see a lot of these higher AAV deals. Crosby is doing $95.4 over the next 9 years, or an average of 10.6/year. It's the last few years at $3mm that make it reasonable.

The middle class of players are going to start disappearing, as the big names are going to eat all the cap space. Or you will start seeing long deals to 2nd liners to compensate for it.

Oh no doubt, I just think that depth is going to come cheaper in the long run because all the stars are going to be signing this way. I would be shocked if Kessel doesn't get 8 year $8mm contract before he goes UFA. Bergeron too probably. I don't think it's wise of the GMs to be doing this, I just think it's where it's headed. It's going to be a bloody mess. So, when's the next lockout? 2022? lol
