Church, when did you go to jump school? I never had to pop my reserve, but I only had 16 jumps when I got out of active duty.

    2006 I think, maybe early 2007.

The old timers in my unit probably did 16 jumps in 4 months, but because of the war on terrur we don't jump as often. I had 41 jumps/4 jumpmasters when I got out and much prefer jumping ramp (C130 or otherwise) than door on a C-17. Most of those were combat/night jumps and I almost always made sure I jumped a C-130 ramp or first out the door with the SGM because I didn't want to get killed by some new kid. This fear was only reinforced when I jumpmaster'd and had these fucking privates throwing me their lines. You should always thank your jumpmaster for not letting you die because it's a lot of fucking work, especially when you're all rigged up too.

Now i feel bad, i will thank you in place of my Jump Master for not letting me die despite kicking me out the door for my first go around.

Also yea, can only imagine what it would be like to be on a stalled plane like that. I wonder what thoughts would go through my head during those moments.

Yeah, after AIT/IET, I was on Bragg for about 3 years (active duty from summer 2001-summer 2005), and spent about half of that in either Kandahar, Afghanistan, or Fallujah, Iraq, so I didn't get many jumps before I got out...but I did almost get killed by a LTC on my German jump, and I got to jump Iron Mike DZ in St. Mere-Eglise in 2004, so I've got quality, if not quantity. I WATCHED a static line injury in jump school in March/April 2002, so you can bet your ass that I ALWAYS handed my static line off to my jumpmasters. That shit is just NASTY.

On topic, I'm really, really surprised at ANY cargo getting loose...USAF loadmasters and the loading teams are usually RIDICULOUSLY meticulous about tiedowns and cargo weight.

Email this to my uncle who is a Jet Engineer at Tyndall AFB in Florida and this is EXACTLY what he suggested as well.

Definitely a load shifting aft. Might have been well enough secured for regular operations, but not an aggressive high AoA takeoff like that.

    @Rakiel

Like I said, USAF might have loaded but probably didn't secure/perform loadmaster duties. It's a civilian plane and the crew on board is usually in charge of their own shit.

I jumped La Fiere DZ and Safeco field tho lol.

If you look at the comments, there is a wife of a soldier claiming that this third party cargo company has had consistant issues with their planes. Constantly being grounded and having issues. Very scary stuff. You would think some of that plane would have survived! It didn't appear to be that high off the ground. Wonder if civilian planes would blow up like that...

What exactly is it that you think causes the huge explosion?

It's just the large amount of fuel on board. Same for civilian aircraft.

Fuel is running through the wings. You think with that much kinetic energy that the plane is just going to bounce in the air? What do you think powers combustion?

Every series I always gave the inspector a high five or a handshake. The guys would be constantly checking, re-checking, and spot checking everything seemingly every 10 seconds or so. Couple little snot nosed punks right out of boot would always thumbs up when they came by and they would check their rigs anyways and sure enough they would complain and moan about how good they were and that the checks were unnecessary. When we jumped off of K-Town on a night run, one guy who actually yelled at the jumpmaster ended up sliding too far out of his harness because the ball straps weren't tight enough (he claimed they hurt his junk because it was too big) and he ended up smashing his ass in to the ground. Broken tail bone. He still has tingling sensations running throughout his back even to this day (happened back in '02-'03) and is on permanent disability.

The cargo shifting definitely makes me worry sometimes. We took off from Eggers on a QD run that was assembled in less than 2 hours. One Abrahms was in the hold upon takeoff and that thing shifted and creaked like no ones business. Can definitely feel the orientation of the craft being thrown off by that single piece of several ton vehicle, imagine 5 of those badboys moving at once. Fuck that noise. No wonder some airliners are considering charging by the pound now.

USAF had nothing to do with it. As of now all evidence points toward unsecured cargo due to possible negligence on National's part.

And LOL at Taliban claiming responsibility in a few of these articles.

Yep, press releases and consensus over at /r/aviation is that the accident was caused by a load shift. During the takeoff climb some of the cargo must have become unsecured and travelled to the back of the aircraft. With the CG now too far aft, the aircraft becomes unstable and, as was seen in the video, unrecoverable. Stall ensues due to the high AOA which cannot be maneuvered out of from the change in CG. Looking at the video, perhaps the pilot attempted to slightly roll out of the stall or point the aircraft away from any objects/people on the ground. At next to no forward airspeed, rolling onto its side the craft generates no real lift and just plummets.

Bagram was quite lively that day I'll tell you that much. The plane literally just dropped from the sky.
