Bike theft charges?

My bike was stolen a week or two ago and they have the guy on camera, walking up with a pair of bolt cutters and working my lock and taking off with it.

That being said, they think they found my bike at a pawn shop (though they haven't verified if it's mine but most likely is), and have the guy's name.


They asked if I wanted to press charges, and I just want to see how hard I'm going to be able to fuck this guy, provided it is my bike.

I think I would press charges but I am not completely confident. Would it be a felony theft charge? How much is the bike worth? I don't want to fuck someone for the rest of their life but I want there to be consequences that are meaningful.

BG bike still in my possession, but essentially. BG bike now belongs to my uncle (he was in the market for a bike and bought a new one and I just kinda took it over and he's been riding mine)

but since my uncle is in jail, I'm reunited with BG bike, but considering he's in for driving on suspended, when he gets out next month, I'll have to have either gotten my bike back or found a replacement

Dude was running around with bolt cutters for the likely purpose of stealing bikes like CS'. He didn't care about fucking up someone else's life. And I'll venture a guess he's done it before, too.

I paid 400 for it, but I got it from old people (original owners) who paid $1,200 for it, had it garage kept and put less than 500 miles on it. Had 100 in bike lights after people kept telling me to get lights the way I ride. Had two $40 gator skin tires because I have to go through 2 miles of construction zone to get to class and again through it on the way home during my rides; and having gone through 13 tubes the previous semester. Ripped one of the tires with a drill bit I ran over, just replaced it with 3 spare tubes the day before it got stolen.

Fuck him, was already having a bad week with 2 days of flats in a row, one having to replace the tire all together. Going to fuck this guy as hard as the law allows.

Actually 3-5 times depending on what you want to get count as hit, but only 2 that ruined my bikes.

One time I got hit by some girl turning out of a parking lot, so she was only going 2mph or something. No damage to me or the bike so I just got back on it and went home.

Another time, my back tire barely got nipped, enough to make me wobble, but not fall off the bike.

The other time, someone caught my backpack (only protrudes another inch or two from my body) w/ their side mirror.

Agreed. I have worked with several felons that have gone through the VA's rehab program. Our company hires non-violent felons who have, served their time, completed the program and have no criminal history for 5 years following completion of the rehab program. They all talk about the regret of doing incredibly stupid things like stealing a car to go for a joyride and getting caught. Yes it was stupid. Yes it was illegal. Yes they did jail time for it. But now 5+ years later they are still working for minimum wage or just over and struggling to get by because not very many people will hire them. That is what I am talking about. Maybe this guy needed money and made the stupid decision to go steal some bikes to get it. Maybe he is not a career criminal. Maybe he is. I don't know.

I am all for consequences and if he is a repeat offender then he deserves everything he gets. But I am not sure I want to be the one that puts them in the position to be a repeat offender because of the hardship of having a felony conviction on their record. The angry spiteful part of me says "fuck you, you stole from me" but the compassionate part of me says I will regret the angry vengeance as I have in the past.

So, circumstances and time to think about it armed with information about the offender would be huge factors in my decision to press charges. Also, stuff is stuff and I can get more.

There is no compassion. There are 2 things you don't fuck with. My laptop and my bike. He may have needed money or he may not have, but he got unlucky and stole from the wrong motherfucker; someone who bikes 150~200 miles a week (depending on number of campuses I go to that semester) to try to deal with his financial problems rather than going to rob someone when he goes a year w/o utilities at home.

Have 0 sympathy for him or any situation he maybe in
