Not a good judge of that though. Both Vader and the Emperor's appearance were due to unnatural causes. And remember for years their appearance was thought to be due to the usage of the dark side of the force in the EU so that even when they did stories where Luke was drawing on the dark side it had a negative effect on his appearance. Lucas was the one that changed that up with the prequels making Vader's an effect of falling into the lava and being toasted while the Emperor got a face full of his own force lightning..

why do people keep saying he was just hiding his real appearance?

Because they want to pretend the prequels didn't happen? It's shown clear as can be that his own force lightning was deflected back into his face by Mace's lightsaber during their battle. Taking that scene out and going by the original EU version then he probably was just using Sith powers or alchemy to hide his actual appearance while Senator and then Chancellor.



Skip to about 2:30 in and you can see it happening clearly. Keep in mind when it comes to Star Wars fans there are still people out there who insist Mace survived the battle also and is currently wandering the lower levels of Coruscant as a one handed hermit.

That is something very likely when you consider just how powerful Palpatine was really supposed to be. Powerful enough that he was able to hide his force sensitivity from every single Jedi in the order that he met including regular meetings with the most powerful Jedi there were. What better way to draw Anakin further in then to make it look like Mace, one of the Jedi Anakin wasn't a big fan of to begin with, was about to murder a defenseless old man who was clearly beaten.

I would have to say he was holding back to draw Anakin in. He knew Anakin's emotions were his weak point, and shattering his perception of the Jedi would make him his 100%.

That whole scene is still so so stupid. Why wouldn't Palpentine stop the lightning when it was burning him like a normal person would do? Why didn't Windu just kill him instead of declaring his intentions first? Why didn't Windu sense Anakin's struggle and/or the swing coming his way? Why didn't Anakin question why the weak old man suddenly could Force Lightning again?

Yea yea masterplan or being focused on the task at hand. So Hollywood, such lazy writing.

There is a conversation that is so important in the second film (iirc). Yoda, windu, and obi-wan are walking in the temple discussing how arrogant the young jedi, and even the older ones, have become. Yoda is a victim of this too and it explains his loss to the emperor as well as windu's. Obi-wan was also arrogant, and you can see that when he simply jumps down behind Grievous and is all like "sup bitch".

The light side was overwhelmed a long time ago by this point and even the masters were easily blind to what was going on. Yoda spends a ton of time in meditation trying to figure it all out and never does.
