Well, to be nerdy realistic, prior to meeting ObiWan, Luke etc Han just hadn't seen any of that stuff yet.

Only the newest books are canon along with the current Marvel titles, Star Wars Rebels, and the Clone Wars cartoons.

None of the dark horse stuff is canon which is where Luke went to the dark side in the Dark Empire series.

So far they are picking and choosing really. Some stuff that happened and places in the Old Republic time period(talking Knights of not prequels) for example has been referenced somewhat in the new material. Basically unless they say otherwise assume it doesn't count right now.
