Are any of the books cannon? I've heard that he goes full dark and then comes back light and just basically becomes the balanced guy.

None of the old books that happened in are canon any longer. The books released in the past year and a half are official canon along with the Marvel comics series. The current canon books are Dark Disciple, Lords of the Sith, Tarkin, A New Dawn, Lost Stars, Battlefront Twilight Company, Heir to the Jedi, Smugglers Run, Weapon of the Jedi, Moving Target, and Aftermath. All of them with the exception of Dark Disciple and Aftermatch take place during the OT time period mostly between IV and V.

The amount of insufferable wooden dialogue between Hayden and Natalie is far greater in 2 than 3.

#2 actually made me so disgusted with the characters that I felt almost nothing watching #3. It's also when I realized that Lucas without decent creative guidance is a hack and you could very much point to everyone around him doing the work vs. Lucas getting to film whatever half-assed ideas he likes, as if Spielberg had an inbred, mentally deficient brother.

I saw an interview with Spielberg after The Crystal Skull. He talked about how Lucas kept wanting to put aliens in the movie and Spielberg kept turning him down. So after a few weeks, Lucas call him up and goes... "Ok... Steve... You're right. No aliens. But how about instead, we put in some interdimensional beings!?" And Spielberg just gave up and said do w/e the fuck you want.
