    SO MUCH FUCKING THIS

I'm not even fat (Well, I kinda am because I have like no muscle mass, so all the weight I gained back is fat, but for me that's way better than the alternative), but this applies to ANYTHING health-related. Just because Person A ate bananas, lots of ham, and celery and drank nothing but grape juice for a year and cured their fucking cancer or some stupid shit that isn't even related to what I have, doesn't mean those things will suddenly NOT cause my guts to go into rapid-fire "Paint The World Red" mode. And then there's the retards who genuinely believe my asshole explodes because I'm not keeping a positive attitude about my asshole exploding. Fuck. Some people just need to keep their pathetic little mind focused on their own business. I haven't even encountered more than a few instances of that sort of "advice" but that's plenty.

Way to go H&M for having a plus-sized model(or an average sized woman) and selling plus-sized clothes! Now for some other trendy stores to get on board. So tired of these stores making women and little girls feel like they have to be a size 0 to matter or be beautiful! God made us in His image! We are ALL beautiful!! You are treasured, You are sacred, You are His! Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now.
^FB post from an in-law today. I threw up in my mouth a little. Body composition is primarily affected by what you eat. Exercise/movement is second, socioeconomic factors are probably third, and genetics are somewhere far down the line (eg Prader–Willi syndrome). And bringing religion into it? Gluttony is one of the seven deadly sins, and the Bible says that the body is a temple, but I love how religious people conveniently ignore that part of the bible because it's not as bad as SMOKING or DRUGS, right?

Shit like this makes me sick. It was so hard to not post a reply.

It's also cheaper to get a simple workout bench, some weights and a pullup bar. Jumprope or stationary bike for cardio. That's what I'm doing, I'll be finishing my 3rd week of working out every other day and while I may be sore after certain exercises I generally feel better physically and mentally. Granted I'm not overweight, but the weight that I do have is all fat and zero muscle.

Kohan, I see 3 issues with those quotes:

    1. Removing diabetes and hypertension from the data in a study on the effect of obesity on mortality? Obesity significantly increases risk of (type 2) diabetes and hypertension, so that seems completely lopsided.

    2. "Lard" is divided between "overweight", "obese" and "severly obese", whereas underweight is just reported as underweight, regardless of whether it's caused by an eating disorder, bona fide starvation or merely a slightly lesser appetite than average.
That seems to be the explanation for the underweight mortality rates: it stands to reason that anorexia and bulimia are the killers, not a slightly elevated risk of osteoporosis.

    3. They ignore the obvious gravitational disturbances caused by having so many fatties in a single place.

But that's potentially a good thing. Pile a few more in and they'll form an event horizon, forever shielding outside observers from having to see them.

6'3'' 410 lb land monster weighing in (fuck you all) - yes, being fat is, 95% of the time, completely controllable. Fat people generally just don't care. We don't value health more than we value that delicious, delicious 1/2 lb flamethrower from DQ.

That, and the time factor. People may say that working out only takes 20 minutes a day (or whatever number they're throwing out these days), but they fail to account for the fact that working out involves way more than *just* the workout. I recently started an exercise routine, and doing 15 minutes of weight (resistance band) training + 20 minutes of aerobics (walking a mile, I'm huge, it's hard for me, fuck you) takes roughly an hour and a half out of my day. And that's me doing my workout routine from home. For people that have to drive to a gym, it would add even more time. If you're working 10-12 hour days (salary sucks sometimes), spending 2 hours on a workout basically kills your downtime from your job.

That said, I think America would be much healthier if we stopped working ourselves to death. We get worked way harder than other countries, and all that added stress impacts hunger and metabolism a lot. And again, as mentioned, if you work 10-12 hour days in an office job, you aren't exactly doing a lot of moving throughout the day. The species has not yet adapted (evolved) to fit the typical life in society today. If we still had to walk around all day scavenging, or hunting, or making tools, or doing *anything* other than sitting on our asses for hours at a time, I can pretty much guarantee you there wouldn't be an obesity epidemic.

After seeing the Abercrombie CEO hate on fat chicks in the news, i found it amusing that i ran into a thread about fatties where the OP is also gay.

I'm overweight by a significant amount (about 230lbs 5'8") and also acknowledge that my weight is the consequence of my decision-making and habits. I do not believe in glorfying overweight people, calling us beautiful, etc. However, there's a difference between this movement of fat glorification/"acceptance" (shit word to use in this case) and not being okay with fat shaming.

Nobody likes the guy who tells smokers to quit because it's bad for them. They fucking know that. And smoking is an addiction, one that this other person likely has not dealt with (and if they have, they wouldn't approach the smoker in the same way - they would offer constructive advice). Weight problems often stem from psychological issues, addiction, etc. I'm fat primarily because I have a binge attitude with everything. I binged on FFXI in my teens, then I binged on weed. Then I went from weed to alcohol. On all three of these drugs (lol), I would binge eat on occasion while using the other stuff. Then I'll go days without, have one small meal, whatever, but then my mind craves, the rational part shuts down, and I get into it again.

I've taken strides to identify the key issues and am working on a solution, and I've been able to go periods of time living healthily, but - this thread is a bit ridiculous. Yeah, obesity is disgusting. So is smoking, so is drinking too much, so are drug addictions, so are psychotic behaviors... the outside looking in attitude that seems to assume that people with weight issues and their lack of self control is somehow that much different from people with other issues is ill-informed and rude.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying that the fact that most weight issues stem from deeper problems than simple "don't eat McDonald's" means that it is out of anyone's control. I also don't think nicotine addiction, alcoholism, etc. are out of people's control. I'm not gonna make a thread about "why do we let smokers smoke and be okay with it?" though. I know that the topic is about this "fat acceptance ur body is beautiful" shit but since the discussion has veered quickly, even in the OP, into "fat people suck", felt the need to add insight here.

Also, just an observation, but a lot of this fat acceptance / body is beautiful stuff - most of it - seems to come from women. Would we say that's because of the aesthetic pressures put on women in society?

Further, underweight individuals are at a greater risk of death than overweight ones.

Conveniently, I was discussing this with someone else recently, so I have reference material immediately available.

In summary: it's better to be at a normal weight, overweight, or slightly obese than it is to be underweight, and the latter creates higher health risks than high levels of obesity do. Also, don't be a dick, and you'll be contributing to improvement.
Based on total follow-up, underweight was associated with significantly increased mortality from noncancer, non-CVD causes (23,455 excess deaths; 95% confidence interval [CI], 11,848 to 35,061) but not associated with cancer or CVD mortality. Overweight was associated with significantly decreased mortality from noncancer, non-CVD causes (-69 299 excess deaths; 95% CI, -100 702 to -37 897) but not associated with cancer or CVD mortality. Obesity was associated with significantly increased CVD mortality (112,159 excess deaths; 95% CI, 87,842 to 136,476) but not associated with cancer mortality or with noncancer, non-CVD mortality. In further analyses, overweight and obesity combined were associated with increased mortality from diabetes and kidney disease (61 248 excess deaths; 95% CI, 49 685 to 72,811) and decreased mortality from other noncancer, non-CVD causes (-105,572 excess deaths; 95% CI, -161 816 to -49,328). Obesity was associated with increased mortality from cancers considered obesity-related (13,839 excess deaths; 95% CI, 1920 to 25,758) but not associated with mortality from other cancers. Comparisons across surveys suggested a decrease in the association of obesity with CVD mortality over time.

As someone who used to weigh 250lbs I can agree with what you said. The issue in America, however, is much larger than that. We work ourselves much harder for less benefit but we also eat much more junk than we really ought to. It's also encouraged (indirectly) by food corps that engage in advertising and marketing practices specifically targeted at the obese demographic. Face it - they know fat people eat a lot. When fat people eat, they make money (and lots of it).

There is nothing in this country anymore that is devoted to teaching people to moderate their food intake, contribution to the nation, or contributions to each other. It's pretty much "WORK. WORK AND PAY YOUR TAXES. MEANWHILE THE TAXES WILL PAY FOR YOUR GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS TO DO JACK SHIT ALL DAY EXCEPT BENEFIT FROM YOUR HARD WORK."

I don't "make fun" of fat people because I know how difficult it can be to be so self-conscious of your body. At the same time, however, I don't pass one driving on a scooter and go "Aw poor fella... it must suck to be him" because I know from experience that he's enabling the situation.

Are you a bad, lazy person because you can't make the time to exercise and moderate your diet? No. Are you a bad, lazy person because you CAN make the time to exercise and moderate your diet and you simply choose not to? Yep.

Just to point out some things that may not have made it into your discussion. The prevalence for persons aged 20+ who are underweight (BMI <18.5) is 1.6%. Not exactly an epidemic. The prevalence of obesity is 35.7%, which doesn't include individuals who are overweight. Combined, people who are overweight or obese account for roughly 65% of the population. Finally, in regards to correcting for T2DM and HTN: 85% of new cases of T2DM and HTN occur in individuals who are overweight and obese.

I'm 5'9 and at my largest I weighed 234lbs. All of my friends couldn't believed I weighed that. Most guessed I weighed around 210lbs. While the number is important, I'm trying to focus also on what's happening to my body. I want to go back to wearing my size 32 pants damnit!

Regarding the second topic, my wife and I were talking about that and she disagrees, although her being from the philippines and that not being so in your face over there may have something to do with it. We both believe people are not honest with themselves regarding their appearance so they make up excuses as to why it's either too hard to lose weight, exercise, etc. I'm not ignorant enough to say every single person is like this, but it's my belief more people than not tell themselves it's ok to be overweight so they don't feel ashamed of how they've let themselves go.
