I think that Amy "being fluent in feline" is a perfect example of the limits of our definition of mental illness. How many irrational things do people have to believe before they are, to use a technical term, "crazy?" Is believing irrational things somehow better as long as you have company (for instance, libertarians?) Should we be medicating or institutionalizing people that believe stupid things? Schizophrenia is, after all, mostly manifest as a series of stupid ideas that you believe.

The motivation to shoot up a movie theater wasn't caused by the actions of people like us egging on an obviously crazy individual like Amy. She's crazy, we know she's crazy and we derive entertainment from it and she/her husband get the desperate attention they crave from having "enemies" on Reddit/Yelp. It feeds their delusions of superiority and we get to see this delusion play out as they apply it to reality.

If she was to go and do something stupid like suicide then it'd turn an otherwise entertaining few days into the media having a field day discussing how the internet is the bastion of cyber-bullying, how we drove these poor entrepreneurs to it, how reality TV is a cancer on society and that mental illness is "no joke". A veritable parade of holier-than-thou nonsense.

Dunno about you, but I'm just here for the crazy and not the guilt trip.
