My theory? They're not going to bother cleaning the winners up at all so they chose entries that have shading that matches with the rest of XI. A lot of those shields you posted don't have the "texture" that most XI items have and they're apparently too lazy to at least do that.

They still have to UV map the shield texture, and add a back-piece pattern, so they'd have to either touch them up or have it redrawn by their own artists regardless. Can't really waste space on the actual texture that'll be used in the game like their template did with all the white-space.
