Honestly, whenever I see people say 'other Asian nations' when pointing fingers to which countries hate Japan, it's really only China and (the two) Korea(s) who keep on dragging the issue out on and on and on. The others seem to certainly have gotten over it.

Of course, people could argue that because the above poll was an Japanese one there might be some bias. So although the poll isn't as conclusive as the above one since it doesn't include that many Asian nations, here's a link to a 2012 BBC Poll of the World's Most Positivily/Negatively Viewed Nations in the World (PDF Document).

Totally anecdotal, but as a white guy who has lived in S.Korea for about 2 years total and who is fluent in Korean, I can count the number of times I've faced racial discrimination here on one hand with fingers left over. That includes times that people have said shit thinking I wouldn't understand them.

I'm neither defending nor attacking S.Korea here, but this poll indicates only one kind of intolerance. Many people who consider themselves non-racist and who behave accordingly can sometimes, in my experience, have racist attitudes when other races become part of a neighborhood. I'm sure I don't have to tell you this, but people often become VERY particular of their neighborhoods residents and often behave in ways they wouldn't with a random stranger. Encounter that race (or hell, not even race but just a social subculture) on the street and racism doesn't even poke out a bit ... put them in a house next door and suddenly its time to let the stereotypes flow, even if just a little.

Racism - like bigotry - depends on the context. Saying "I hate blacks" is racism, saying "I hate whites" is racism. Saying "He's black" or "he's white"is not, unless the context is derogatory - which it isn't necessarily. If the cops ask you to describe the assailant, stating that "he was black" or "he was asian" does not mean you're racist, it just means that a black person or an Asian committed the crime. Saying he was a nigger, however, would make you racist as it is a derogatory term.

I work in a law enforcement/security field. When writing a BOLO (Be On the Look Out), black is a descriptive element of the person. In fact, that's a perfectly valid way of describing someone. "Black female, black hair, dark eyes, approximately 5'6", 150 lbs, last seen wearing a red shirt and blue jeans." Sounds like a thorough description to me.

It does go both ways, too, we describe white people as being white. I don't know why this is an issue. People are afraid to say someone is black? Well if I'm looking for someone it is a lot easier to say what they look like. Skin color is part of that.

I gave you several in my post. Saying someone is black is not racist, saying someone is white is not racist. For example; if the police ask you to describe the assailant and you state he's black, that does not make you a racist. Saying he's a nigger do. It all depends on the context. I have a black friend (and I'm talking really black) who we constantly joke with and say she needs to smile so we can see her if the lights are turned off.

Swedes have the same definition of white as an American country club: Scandinavians, Icelandic, Germans, Anglo-Saxons, and Dutch. The French aren't white here, they are Gallic. Italians are not white, Spanish are not white, Croats and Serbs are not white - you get the picture. Unlike America, there is a distinction made between Northern Europeans and Southern/Eastern Europeans. People in America consider all fair-skinned people white, while in Sweden this is simply not the case. They don't need to have blue eyes and blonde hair; it's the facial features and skin tone.

In Sweden, we've taken "stranger danger" to an extreme. We're wary of almost everyone who don't fit in our narrow definition. We don't like Jews, because in the mind of Swedes they stole Palestine from the Palestinians. We dislike Russians because they look dangerous. We dislike French because they're stuck-up. We dislike Muslims because they hate women, we dislike the rest of Europe because they're trying to force us to use EUR and take away our snus, we dislike the Chinese because they're trying to buy up Sweden. We do not dislike blacks, because we feel sorry for them. We do, however, cross the street to the opposite side at night if we see one coming. We don't like the Polish people because they're dangerous because they look different. We do use them for cheap illegal labour though, they're our mexicans, and we admire their work ethic. We dislike the Greek because they're all lazy. We dislike the PIGS countries because they're dragging the rest of EU down with them. We dislike America because they don't care about the environment the same way we do, and they're trying to steal the wiki-leaks guy from us, and they're waging war against the poor muslims (who we also dislike) so they move to our country instead. We dislike South America because they all love and produce drugs, and they also look black so we cross the street when we see them.

We love tourists, because we always love when people want to come visit us. It's a strange situation, kind of a love-hate relationship with the entire world. Because we're always honored that people want to come and move to what Swedes think is the greatest country on earth (because we're the only country in the world that does everything right, which is also why we hate the rest of the world because they do everything wrong), but we don't like them moving here for too long because they have a hard time fitting in with our very strange customs of avoiding conflict no-matter-what. Even if you look like us and speak like us, if you don't act like us we dislike you. And it's very hard to act like us if you haven't lived here your entire life.

And that's the thing; Swedes aren't directly racist against heritage; we're racist towards white people too if they don't act like us. To us, it just feels like there's something off about you, and we don't like things that are strange. It makes us uncomfortable. Whereas in America you had the white flight where all of the white people moved out of the city in to the suburbs, we have the opposite. We just took all of the immigrants and placed them outside the city so we don't have to deal with them making us uncomfortable with their strangeness. But this makes us feel uncomfortable too, because we're supposed to not be racist and open to other cultures, so we make up for it by pretending we're the least racist people on earth, and jump on any chance to make up for our wrongs.

Hell, just the other month we nominated a muslim to sit in the government. His name was the only Muslim-sounding name on the list, so everyone voted for him without knowing anything about him. Then we found out he preached about killing all of the Jews, so we kicked him out of the party. And that's just one example of our "swedish guilt". Another example is the 2010 Stockholm suicide bombing. Despite using a car bomb and a suicide vest, the bomber did not manage to damage property or harm anyone beside himself. In response, Swedes put flowers and candles where he died every year.

In Swedish culture, we have something called "jantelagen", which is deeply rooted in every Swede. Basically, it says this:

You're not to think you are anything special.
You're not to think you are as good as us.
You're not to think you are smarter than us.
You're not to convince yourself that you are better than us.
You're not to think you know more than us.
You're not to think you are more important than us.
You're not to think you are good at anything.
You're not to laugh at us.
You're not to think anyone cares about you.
You're not to think you can teach us anything.

It says that you should not think you're better than anyone else, nor that your opinion matters. It's why in Sweden, we never address someone by their title or last name - even our boss - because that suggests they're worth more than someone else. Which is why Swedes are afraid of openly having a different opinion from everyone else - and that is the exact reason every Swede pretends to not be racist at all. Which leads us to studies like this. If you ask a Swede to their face, they'll appear to be the most open person in the world to foreign cultures, And yet, Sverigedemokraterna (the Swedish Democrats; the political party who wants to stop immigration and kick all of the Muslims out) in a recent poll even beat Miljöpartiet (the green party/environmental party, who for a long time has been the third largest in Sweden). But remember kids, no one voted for them, because we all love immigration. Hell, even third-generation immigrants (the ones that grew up with Swedish culture and therefor act Swedish) even vote for the Swedish Democrats because they're bothered by the way a lot of new immigrants act.

As a matter of fact, I have not met a single Swede who do not have some racist thoughts once they loosen up or get some alcohol in them - especially in northern Sweden.

tl;dr Swedes are hypocritical and absolutely insane. We're a very strange people, so it's hard to explain exactly what's up with us as it's a rather... complicated and strange issue. Don't know how stuff are in Finland, Denmark and Norway, but I think it's somewhat similar.

I find it comical to see that Nigeria is up there in terms of racism. We are just openly honest unlike the rest of the world. We only really hate the Chinese for coming into our country taking our oil and pushing their shitty electronics on us at a premium, White Americans for having similar values to the [White] British (we also take great pride in scamming stupid, older, greedy Americans with Advance Fee Fraud), British people for conquering us, fucking up the country, then leaving and giving our nation to the largely uneducated Northern Nigerians, and Hausa People (Northern Nigerians; Muslim) who largely continued to fuck up and make the country worse after the British left.

We love just about everyone else in the world. If you are White and of non-British, non-American descent, you'll have an easy time in Nigeria.

Yeah, I've been around Europe over the years and it's pretty accurate what Kappa said. Albanians are decently racist, but I think it's more so being a closed off nation. Go there as a black or brown guy and you'll get stares and people pointing at you like you're some kinda spectacle. It's silly.

I had a couple good experiences with Parisians -

One warned us of a scam these kids were playing on people sitting on the green in front of the Eiffel Tower. Shared wine and food with her after.
Another found my friend's wallet, called us, met up with us, and gave us her address in case we needed somewhere to stay in Paris in the future.

Maybe it was because I actually tried to speak the language when interacting with Parisians that I never felt this oppressive hate. Also I'm white.

Large cities all have their assholes and their nice people. Paris is no exception, but they have a reputation for being so elitist that they do not even accept other French people. That street definitely goes both ways though.

I visited Grenoble and stayed with a French family that I knew only incredibly tangentially. It was excellent and they took me to a mountaintop restaurant where we watched Bastille day fireworks from above. Hosted me for three days. We had an excellent time and they delighted in my terrible French, which they hinted I should probably not use in public. By the end of the visit, they felt I could at least say Grenoble somewhat satisfactorily, which I consider a victory.

I have no extra complaints about the French compared to the rest of humanity.
