I work at a hotel as a bellman/bus driver. Most times I've had zero problems with the French guests, but lately there have been a rash of ultra entitled douches that expect us to shit when they say so. My coworker literally asked a guy if he'd like help with his 2 foot tall suitcase and the guy gave him a snarky ass remark along the lines of "well it's not going to push itself!". Even most old ladies would have said no thanks, I got this.

They'll complain about the american hegemony but their attitude concerning the rest of the francophony is even worse. We're basically little simple folk and we have the audacity of not pronouncing their glorious, perfect language exactly the way they'd like. Mockery and disdain ensues.
Shit, I get better treatment in France if I pretend to be British or Flemish. I don't really speak dutch, but it doesn't matter. I'll let you in on a little secret: Dutch doesn't actually exist. We just make random noises and pretend it's a language. Example: "Ik verlenen berangeren ijnenen van gogh? Ja, verhooflezen een rijzenen bleeenenft!"

It's hard to not dislike the French if only just a little bit.

They force-feed their language that nobody but them and some irrelevant countries understand (in Europe). Like in Eurovision, everything has to be in English and French, and the announcers of French votes only speak French.

I get it why they want to preserve their way too complex language for its own good, but at least speakers of other major languages in Europe like the Spanish Italian, German and Russian don't rub everyone's face in their language. Sure, the southern Europe tends to not care about learning English or using it but at least its more akin to indifference than outright hostility towards English. I wish I could say the same about the French.

Having lived in Italy for 8 months now, I can start to see a pattern of some sort. Northern Europe cares way too much about not seeming racist, while Southern Europe is pretty much indifferent towards anyone but the black immigrant coming from Africa, but they can still be clearly uncomfortable around English/broken Italian speaking finlandese who aren't as social and outgoing and who do not understand and glorify the fact that nothing works in Italy.

I feel Americans are the exact same...and show it too. How many times have you seen an English speaking American yell at a barely-audible-English-speaker telling them to learn English because they are in America? Or is this something only I've seen countless times in person?

What's so complex about French? I took it in middle/high school and afaik (admittedly not much) it's not terribly different from the other romance languages.

Also as English speakers I don't think we have any right to call any other language "complex".

It's full of stupid exceptions that serve little to no purpose. Someone said it's because the language was "frozen" for like 400 years in the Middle Ages and couldn't develop naturally or some shit, idk.

At least they're antagonistic towards a language that makes just as little sense (if not less sense) than their own.

Also I find it funny how badly Italians comprehend and speak English. Seems like half of the vocab is shared due to the latin roots.

Italian, french and Spanish all begin to pronounce sui as a ui sound, but english speakers begin the word as a oooa sound.

I was actually talking about that the other day, it's why German sounds so funny to us really.

When a sentence in German is almost identical to a sentence in English it just sounds like someone is just speaking English in a mock German accent.

It's shockingly similar to a lot of Germanic languages. The Vikings had a strong influence in English coastal cities, which is why there's so many Norse loan words in the English language, like "Window", originating from the Old Norse word vindauga (wind eye), which later evolved in to window. Here's a bunch of other words:

That's because that's exactly what happens. Most people, unfortunately, aren't terribly skilled with words, and pick up their pronunciation from the people around them. Those people are often wrong. For instance, one of my friends pronounces "Trailer" as "Traller." He can say "Trail" just fine.
