Allegedly, shops that wish to buy and sell a title will need to be hooked up to a Microsoft database so that access to the game can be removed from the previous owner's account and transferred to a new one. A retailer can sell the game for whatever it likes, but the system will ensure that a cut goes to publisher as well as Microsoft. It all sounds fairly logical, but who knows? The truth could be even more complicated.

I see this more screwing the consumer then anything. If MS and the publisher are getting cuts from the sale of the used game (which will probably be a decent cut) that means where ever you are trading in your games at is going to hose you on trade in value to cover themselves on the resell.

Example:

You buy new game for $60

2 weeks later go to trade it in

Game store will sell the game for $50 used

Before the game store got all of the revenue from the used sale now they only get lets say 50%

So to they will only make $25 on selling it used

They offer you $10 in trade on a 2 week old game, before you would have got $18-$28 in trade depending on the games popularity.

Obviously the percentage is just a guess but I cant imagine MS plus the publisher only taking a tiny portion of the sale after going through the trouble of doing all of this and setting up the system needed to make it work.

The big question is how much of a cut will they get. Even with the numbers you gave, stores like gamestop are still taking a huge hit. $50-~$20, they still made $30; if they're only going to get $25, and pay $10 for the game, they only make $15. Half their income gone, that's huge.

Beyond used game stores, Gamefly is the one who is definitely screwed hard in this. How have their stocks been doing since this announcement?

Exactly, which will also pretty much eliminate any of the mom and pop or smaller chain retailers who do used games from selling X1 used titles. Either because they dont meet some requirement to join the X1 trade network or because they don't due enough volume to make the hassle worth it.

Fuck that, take it a step further. Every time a used couch is sold, the manufacturer should get a cut. That old bike you don't need anymore, huffy gets a cut when you sell it on craigslist. Your beat up old Ford? They want in when you trade it for a Toyota
