It's kind of hilarious how fucking awful these specs are on the consoles with today's standards, how could you run anything with that garbage? When I look at shit like God of War, Last of Us, it really boggles my mind that they managed to make games look that good despite the limitations.

I presume you're calling the specs "awful" by comparing them to PCs, in which case you're making the mistake of underestimating a closed box's advantages.

A lot of the techniques developers learned to use with Cell will be more applicable than ever with the new consoles having 6'ish mutli-threaded cores for the devs to play with. Can't just throw all the processing tasks on 2-3 cores and call it a day.

Granted, the fixed amount of ram for the CPU/GPU didn't help much on multi-plats compared to 360's unified memory.
Requires separate training to understand how to utilize the cell processor. Sure you can get stuff to run without taking extra time, but it won't run very well. Some companies didn't want to spend man hours on that. Now that everything is on "PC's" it should be less of an issue moving forward.

Also the multiplatforms were written (in most cases) for the xbox... so whatever limitations it had, the PS3 got stuck with.

Even if you put like, 16 GB of ram in a PC, how much can a game really use?

I'm not underestimating anything. Just saying that compared to hardware they are jumping to with the PS4, it's a bit ridiculous considering the PS3's specs and amazing looking games like I mentioned.

This was the main reason for my question. Even if the PS4 is superior to the XB1, aren't devs going to build their games for the XB1 and then just port them to the PS4?

That depends. I expect a lot of games to have more issues programming for the Nextbox than the PS4. The nextbox has slow ram and requires ESRAM to speed the ram up. Problem is that ESRAM is only 32MB. That can limit the FPS (in some cases) and will have to be more precisely monitored.

The PS4 is basically a PC. Nothing is all that different than any other PC. It has faster ram (and more accessible ram). This can lead to companies making the Nextbox be 30FPS (for example) and having the PS4 run at 60 FPS, among other things.

So, Xbox Juan is basically a pre-built HP: inferior specs and all the bloatware you don't want or need.

And the Magical Cloud. It will offset EVEN THE BEST COMPUTERS. They already said Nextbox with the cloud = 40x the Xbox360.

“It’s also been stated that the Xbox One is ten times more powerful than the Xbox 360, so we’re effectively 40 times greater than the Xbox 360 in terms of processing capabilities [using the cloud]. If you look to the cloud as something that is no doubt going to evolve and grow over time, it really spells out that there’s no limit to where the processing power of Xbox One can go. I think that’s a very exciting proposition, not only for Australians, but anyone else who’s going to pick up the Xbox One console.”

Turning up the AA doesn't take much effort, fortunately.

All this bragging about cloud processing on the X1 compensating for its inferior specs, wouldn't that mean the game would need to always be online a la Sim City V if developers were to take advantage of it?

Yup. The massive latency makes it's uses extremely limited too. For something like sim city, it can work great if done well, but you could never handle graphics that way.

Cloud computing does shit for the graphical end of things with today's connection quality given the amount of throughput that'd demand, but yeah, it'd require online.

Outside of multiplayer stuff where cloud would just be a fancy term for dedicated server, I don't see it doing much for consoles. What processing can you even offload in a single-player game that doesn't require it to be essential to the realtime gameplay? I picture an FPS where the AI is cloud-computed, it'd just meant they'd all react to you based on ping, or sit still stupid if there's a lag in the connection, like playing a multiplayer game. High-end eye-candy physics would be weird also due to latency, and physics props that you can't interact with could just be pre-computed anyhow like HL2:Episode2 did.

[EDIT] Beaten, but yeah. Unless they're going to try live video streaming of games to do the stuff Gaikai says they want to ('eventually') with PS4 would justify the huge increase in servers Microsoft boasted.

Live-streaming gaming was kinda neat to try out, but I'm positive MS isn't talking about that. I believe their whole performance boost concept is predicated on others' ignorance of the subject.

The huge (HUGE) reason for this kind of stuff is that consoles allow the developer to interact directly with the hardware without having to deal with Directx/OpenGL, and not having to deal with compatibility issues.

I can see search warrants for digital media being typed up and requested specifically for X1's kinect at crime scenes lol.
