The fat PS3's CPU and GPU chips generate too much heat. The solder between the chips and mobo melt and eventually lose contact. This is what causes YLOD. Which can be fixed (most of the time, I've done it like 8x) temporarily by reflowing the mobo. Btw, I got like 120 bucks back from the parts.

Had a PS3 from Uncharted bundle still chugging without any hiccups - are there any warning signs like the 360 sorta had for YLOD?
For my 1st ps3 there was a blackout in the area and it seems the power supply died, on my second got the ylod it was a very hot summer(no ac and average it was over 90 even at night time)here so i guess that played a huge part on it dying

^ This. I remember my old "fat" PS3 (which I bought used) lasted for about 3 years or so until one day I started getting the "green screen" and couldn't do much of anything:

I decided to try and take it apart (some pictures I took here if anyone's interested) and reflow it to see if that would help... lasted only a couple of days before it started acting up again, but at least I was able to get my game saves onto a USB drive. I remember having to buy a Torx(?) screwdriver that was long enough to reach that first embedded screw on the side behind the rubber stopper just to get the outer shell off... @_@

A friend of mine ended up having his "fat" PS3 getting bricked during a system update. A while before that, he ended up getting a 360 for Christmas and it died on him within a couple of days. I also remember having an old PS1 that stopped reading discs.

It's funny... never had any issues like that with any Nintendo consoles that I can recall, lol.

Nintendo easily has the most reliable consoles. My fat ps3 died a couple years after (thermal paste prob) but was able to get it working again to recover data. My bro has gone through 1 ps3 as well, but 5 360's. still have a N64 that works fine and bro has an original Nintendo that runs fine.

Old consoles will always have longer lives, less moving parts to break, not even remotely close to the same levels of heat generation.

While there is a lot of truth to this the old systems were also tough as balls. My little bro got pissed one day when we were playing our original Nintendo and picked up the system and through it against the wall. That thing still works like a champ even to this day.

I also remember someone doing an abuse test of the Xbox/PS2/Gamecube that ended with the systems being dropped off the top of a 2 story building onto concrete and the GC still worked. Nintendo has stupid good build quality on their stuff.

Didn't someone drag a GC behind their car and it still worked or something?

Still on my fully backwards compatible fat PS3 from launch, albeit with replacing the laser every now and then. Been through three 360's within a 2-3 year window.

My old fat BC PS3 is still working too but it's always whined like a banshee after being on for a while. It boggles my mind how the system manages to get that hot just sitting at the XMB menu, not doing a damn thing.

When my brother moved into a new apartment a few years ago there was no heat for a few days (winter) so he put his 360 and PS3 in his bedroom and left them on at night.

It's like the cooling systems on new consoles are always a generation behind the rest of the hardware (I remember fat PS2s were pretty hot/loud too).

I had an old pos computer I never cleaned and my friend I would played Skate 3 on PS3 during downtime of FFXI. So I'd have FFXI running on my PC while it's screaming, my PS3 on for Skate 3, and my 360 on so we could chat. My apartment used to get so hot in the summer .

Hell yeah, thats fucking dedication lol. In my house in Charlotte, one of my upstairs bedrooms has always been a server/gaming room, I can leave the windows cracked in the winter and that room is still warm as fuck.

I feel your pain on that one for sure.

The first time the fan of my PS3 really kicked in was a few weeks ago when I was resisting turning on the AC and just leaving my windows open. Freaked me out at first cause I don't think it's happened before. It reminded me of how loud I remember the 360 fans being..

My PS3 fat used to kick into high speed (as if it had 5 speed settings) during a hot summer (no a/c) and I'd be playing RDR online.

Boy was that shit loud, and I should have taken that as a sign of "this thing is overheating". Shame Sony never made use of that part of its code that can detect overheating and issue a warning. God damn was RDR's multiplayer fun though with a posse.

With Xbone's fucking massive case, I would hope that puppy would last minimum 5 years with zero issue. It's got a relatively huge amount of potential airflow in it. I doubt the PS4 would have as much due to Sony's more recent trend with making sleek/slim consoles.

I wouldn't be surprised if it followed the same pattern as the previous 3 Playstations -- Fat one at release, then a few years later they release a slim version.

As long as the power brick remains within the console.
