I've been going back and playing 3U with different weapons, and MH4 on my Japanese 3DS some, but I kind of want the areas and monsters to feel fresh when 4U hits next week. On 3U I've really been trying to get into the gun lance, but I have so much trouble making contact with monsters. I'm so used to the long sword, but I know people hate that online, so I've really been trying to break the habit.

I too have gone back to 3U. Started a brand new character and just started in the Village to try out Gunlance as well. I am switching between that and SnS. I am not so sure about SnS, though it may be that the new tweaks and combos make it better. I just can't seem to do what I want to with it lol. Rathalos felt like herding cats... and I never ever evvvver remember that second S in SnS...

Gunlance though, a ton of fun, I just really really really feel like I am spending half the time resharpening. If I remember right, Samalis was the one that mained the GL in our group? Speaking of, haven't seen many of the old people we played with post much in here. Wetticus, Samalis, Demo and Eleven. You guys going to play?!

I never played SnS much, but my understanding is that it is way better in 4U. I may work on HH again, or try the SA for a bit. I just need to keep busy for another week. I may have mentioned this before, but I am actually taking next Friday off of work just to play. My wife is even giving time off from helping with the baby since she knows how much I'm looking forward to it.

Belongs in the Win thread. That's great.

My fiancee complains if I play games, then sits on her laptop playing solitaire when I stop.

    QUICK EDIT:

    4 hour drive to in-laws = Majora's Mask
Time my fiancee spends trying to get addresses for her family for the wedding = MH4

Hehe. Yeah I got ya beat Galois... took Friday, Monday and Tuesday "off". Not quite as bad/good as it sounds though as I will still be working from home. So I won't be play constantly but definitely will be playing every possible second in between work.

It's really only for that day, but it's basically my Valentine's Day present. My wife is generally pretty good about letting me play (as I type "letting", it sounds bad, but I'm sure you guys understand) as long as I help when needed. In all honesty, handheld gaming is all I do now since the baby came; it's easy to just shut the system or hit the PS button on the Vita to stop, change the baby, get my wife something, whatever, and then go back to playing.

I realize that this is not as doable for online hunting, but I will likely do that more at night when the wife and baby are both sleeping.

As bad as it sounds, I can usually close my office door and sneak some time in when code is running, or play during lunch. Working from home definitely makes it wasier though

We will have to hunt Friday when we're all ready!

I was just thinking the same thing the other day. It's great I can just shut the 3DS and do something then pick up where I left off when I open it up again. Makes it much easier to get time in.

    That and extended bathroom time.

Yep, fully agree. It is pretty damn nice that my daughter is older now and can actually join in on the gaming when she wants. She and I have a pretty decent rivalry going with fighting games, got her her own Fight Stick a couple years back and it is a blast. That said, if her mother isn't working in her home office, she is also hanging out with us, ignoring whatever the shit is we are playing and Crushing Candies™. She is worse than either of us. Though she did take over the PS4 for a week when Never Alone came out as she is from Alaska and wanted to play it.

I am actually KIND of excited that I will have two copies of the game. Going to do my best to get my daughter hunting Monsters. She is interested, but damn there is a lot to learn and tons of "Eff this! I can't do it!" exit points...

Back on track, what are everyone's plans on Friday? I mean to say, when you fire up the game, is everyone going to spend at least a bit of time in the first Village to get a decent set of Armor and a couple upgrades? Or is everyone wanting to jump straight into the deep end? It wasn't until 3U that I really spent any significant time outside of the solo realm, so I generally go for the former... but with a competent group (and then Rata =P) I wouldn't even mind us hunting online in garbo sets.

I can probably play a bit Friday night which I'd spend doing Village quests most likely. Saturday morning EST (like 8-11ish) I'd be able to play some online before having to hop in the car for a 4/5 hour drive.

The in laws always mess up my gaming plans. We went up the weekend Smash was released as well.

As for the question of what I'll do friday, well i'm also working, but my plan is to make sure Zelda MM and MH4U are downloading before I go to bed (if Nintendo is right i should be able to download zelda around Wednesday so i would just need to download MH4U Friday at midnight)

Then there's the question of When Ebgames opens usually it's at 10, they might open at 8 or 9, but will depend of work if i can sneak out and go get my stuff.

then the usual 1h+ of System update + system transfer (BLEH)

Then I dunno either some MM or MH4U, that's what bugs me, I wanna play with you guys, but If i don't play enough you'll be too far ahead

Whatever, I don't mind playing lower missions if you get behind Rata. I just know some people don't like to be carried. Everyone here sounds like they can't exactly no-life this game (that is me pretending I am not going to no-life this game) so whatever, we play when we can!

Ever since 3U I've been keen to get the village stuff out of the way as soon as possible as that makes grinding materials for traps and potions and shit a lot less tedious. I can't imagine how annoying it would be to get up to High Rank Guild but have to go back and do all the low rank village nonsense just to get my farm up to speed or what not. I'm not sure if the Village has those kinds of things in 4U, but considering it's been a staple since Monster Hunter 2 I wouldn't be surprised. So I'll probably spend the first couple of days seeing what that's all about.

That said, the Battle Armor which you can typically make/buy by like 2* Village is a decent starting armor set for Blademaster. Gives Attack (S) and Speed Sharpening naturally and has 5 slots I believe. If you are going Hunting Horn, Bone Armor gives KO King and Maestro and is just as early.

When do you guys think it's a good idea to sharpen?

Like for the Demo (we start at green) Do you

    1) sharpen when it's red so you don't recoil?
    2) When monster runs away to another zone?
    3) W/e comes first

Depends on the monster. Best general rule is to make sure you never recoil and to probably sharpen each time you're about to change zones. Some weapons can get away with lower sharpness like a Hammer or Switch Axe since they have ways to become immune to recoil.

Why you should sharpen whenever you have a chance, or how I learned to love the Whetstone.

tl;dr Sharpness, especially at Blue and above, adds a significant boost to your damage. Sharpening takes like 4 seconds without speed sharpen. If you need to zone out, sharpen, zone back in. It helps a lot.

That's my mentality too, Voyage. I always try to stay at high/max sharpness whenever possible. It is just how I have always played, and like knowing when you can get away with using a potion, you will learn to perfectly anticipate when you can get away with using a whetstone. Another rule of thumb, I always sharpen when I change areas after a monster has left. Just a good habit to have.

You know, it is too bad that Adam/Gaijin Hunter already has a pretty full time job as I would pay $50 in a second if he pulled an ENB and did a Future Press guide for MH4U. In a heartbeat.

As far as SnS Doombear, my roomate main'd it in 3U and had huge success with Elemental and Status Inflicting variants, especially Paralyze with Status +2, mmmmm delicious free hits with my Great Sword :D
