If you want to argue that this program likely goes way deeper than what they have confidentially briefed to congress, go for it.

And remember, this is the same Congress that would do anything to stand in the way of anything Obama wants to get done. The Republicans would LOVE to expose him as a tyrant spying on Americans.

i wish that were the case, but conservatives are perfectly willing to break from the contrarian act when it suits their needs. they're all on board for giving as much power to the national security/surveillance apparatus as possible, so this is one issue where you'll probably see a lot of republicans publicly praise obama. i'm certain there's already been a number of instances of that happening, but i'm too lazy to actually dig them out.

Finally caught up on the thread. This about sum it up:

Seriously wondering what the reactions here would be if this was revealed under President Romney.

First, they came for non-Americans, and I was silent.

    Yeah, pretty much.

Edward Snowden may well be the bravest man on the face of the planet. His life is going to be absolute hell from here on out.

Perhaps, but having a higher profile reduces the risk of getting assassinated, if you believe the government is into that sort of thing. He would be in a position to know at any rate.

Greenwald, Snowden(via the Guardian taped interview w/ Greenwald), and Binney all on Democracy Now today. Good shit. Watch it/listen to it before E3, slackers.

HK has an extradition treaty with the US, but China apparently has veto power. Popular opinion is that China doesn't want the headache of granting asylum but might allow him to escape elsewhere, for example N Korea or Bermuda, neither of which have extradition treaties with US.

Well, if someone wants to know why the US government can get away with this sort of thing i can always refer them to this thread for a reason why. The other thing i found amusing is the people who dive into this thread to inform others they already knew about it and that being concerned is for losers. That shit literally happens in every political thread. We should start compiling a list of these hipsters.

I like the same people in this thread "nbd'ing" it up that lost their shit when the police banged on some doors in Boston.

Glenn Greenwald dished it out to a few people today on the whole "nothing to hide, nothing to worry about" excuse. Among 1 of his replies he brings up the church committee and MLK; it's easy to forget something that happened so long ago, especially honkies who could care less about the civil rights movement.

Also, Snowden broke it down himself in his interview: you receive a wrong call = NSA links you to a suspected terrorist, digs through your profile of unlimited phone and internet records, and wa-la your ass is on their radar based off inferred suspicion.

All that paranoia/cynicism people have had about the govt and their warrantless/meritless wire-tapping was just, who woulda thunk it?

And on the subject of American intelligence gathering "for the good" and all the prevented terrorist plots being discussed is cute. All the detaining/torturing of grunts or lowly criminals over there, the co-operation with opium warlords, the aimless drone strikes. All effective ways of counter-terrorism. Look how we found Binny, the biggest joke of all intelligence gathering; got sent on a wild goose chase off of our favorite means of gathering: torture. The CIA and FBI are only effective at chasing pot and intimidating activists/journalists/whistleblowers.

Why would he manage to get asylum in Bermuda? The only reason the Uighur's got to stay in Bermuda was as a favor to the US and this is a situation where it would be the exact opposite.

I have no idea, those were the two mentioned on the radio. Since then however he's mentioned Iceland, and they seem to be willing to accommodate him provided he can get there.
