A spiritual successor to Panzer Dragoon that's exclusive to Xbox One? This is a real slap in the face.

Has there been any word on Kinect about this? From what I knew before they re-showed this at E3 it was supposed to be a Kinect game for the 360. Did they change that?

Nope, still a kinect plus controller. Think Steel Battalion with a better response.

Controller support was added due to demand by fans
Among the games that Microsoft was showcasing for the Xbox One was something that, once upon a time, was intended for the Xbox 360—Crimson Dragon, the latest game from Yukio Futasugi, creator of Sega’s beloved Panzer Dragoon series.

Its apparent spiritual successor was to be for the Kinect, yet vanished sometime last year. And all of a sudden it’s back, seemingly the same exact game as before, but on the Xbox One and with added controller support, which many were clamoring for.

So, is it truly the same game, just with a different control scheme, or are there other improvements under the hood? Also, has Crimson Dragon been done for some time now, and is simply waiting for the Xbox One’s release to catch up with it, or is the game still being pieced together?

According to Yutaka Noma, producer of the game, “What you see is still a work in progress. One of the key things we decided to do was enhance the visuals. The [Xbox One] is so powerful that we can express our vision much more with this console.”

“We are also enhancing the dragon breeding system; depending on how you do it, your dragon evolves in different ways. So your dragon might not look like mine. Ours will also have different attributes; your might be faster, but mine stronger.”

As for how long Crimson Dragon has been in development exactly…

“A long time!” Noma shared with Siliconera. “Because of the change of direction, it required a little bit more time. Plus the change in hardware allows us to do more. There has been nothing to fix.”

That last part is in reference to how a more traditional control scheme has been added to the game, which some viewed as a means of fixing a wrong—which is not exactly the case. In fact, the delay has allowed for a game that had been intended all along.

“In the beginning, Microsoft approached Futasugi-san about doing a Kincect game for the Xbox 360, and he came up with a vision to do the ultimate Kinect game, with dragons,” Noma revealed.

“We actually wanted to support both the Kinect and a regular controller in the very beginning, but it takes time and lots of work to support both. Then we got lots and lots and lots of feedback from passionate fans, who all said ‘please support a controller’. Because of the new technology and added time, Futasugi-san went ‘okay, let’s go for it!’”

    360 version hasn't been canceled
Crimson Dragon – which was announced for Xbox 360, severely delayed, and then shifted to Xbox One – may still appear on the current-gen console.

Speaking to Polygon, director Yukio Futatsugi hinted that the situation is a little more complicated than a platform change.

“[The Xbox 360 version] has not officially been canceled,” he said.

“Microsoft is going to make an announcement about that, so I can’t really talk about it.”

The long delay to Crimson Dragon thanks to the platform shift has given Futatsugi time to implement a much requested feature – the option to play with a control pad instead of just Kinect, something which he thought was impossible last time he talked about the game.

“Balancing the game is the most difficult part of development at the moment because playing it with Kinect and playing with the gamepad are two totally different ways to enjoy the game,” he said.

“That’s what I’m suffering through right now.”

He’s also suffering from changes to gameplay; players can now choose fom a wider variety of dragons, and most challengingly, play alone, in co-op, or with a friend’s ghost data.

“We’re trying out a way we can balance that without taking too much time, while still making the game fun,” he said.

Once known as Project Draco, Crimson Dragon is an on-rails shooter in the spirit of panzer Dragoon, a series Futatsugi was intimately involved with.

    Day One update with hot-fixes
Crimson Dragon director Yukio Futatsugi has confirmed that his spiritual successor to Panzer Dragoon wil l receive difficulty and gameplay updates before Xbox One launches tomorrow.

Now, writing on Xbox.com, Futatsugi explained, “I’ve heard the feedback on Crimson Dragon and plan to adjust the balance of the game before we launch on Xbox One this week. Crimson Dragon is designed to be challenging. This has always been my vision for the game. I want you to feel like you’ve accomplished something each time you master a mission.

“To be proud of each dragon you’ve worked so hard to evolve to its ultimate form. My challenge as the game director is to find the sweet spot of adhering to my vision for the game while keeping the game from becoming too frustrating. Using the power of Xbox One’s cloud system, we can adjust this balance even after release. Based on the feedback so far, we’ve decided to make some changes even before the game is released.”

The changes mentioned will see an increase in experience points earned in each battle, as well as higher rewards when you fail a mission. The cost of items has lowered, while the regularity of in-game jewel currency has increased. Casual and Classic forms of play have also been tweaked to better align with their difficulty levels.
