I have a question about villagers leaving. I've had a really great relationship with Roald, always talk to him, send presents and letters occasionally, since he's one of the better neighbors I have but today when I loaded Isabelle told me he was moving out. I've been mean to other neighbors so I'm really at a loss as to why he's leaving. Can anyone shed some light on this mechanic?
Second question, is it possible to get him back via campsite or other means of just trying to remove other neighbors?

    I feel sad today

I have the opposite problem. I had a stupid deer say he was moving out on the ninth, talking about how he wanted to do turf wars. I told him to "turf away" the second option, and basically told him to gtfo. He then went "nah, cant stand the thought of leaving as frenemies" and i guess hes not moving out now? -,- are you supposed to tell them to stay the first time to reverse psychology them into leaving or something? lol

If you hear from other villagers that someone is moving out, just ignore them until they're gone. Sometimes they will literally stay just to spite you if you tell them to get lost.

There is a whole lot of random in this game when it comes to the animals. Even if you're doing everything right, an animal may consider moving away. All you can really do is try to pressure them into staying.

There's no real way to bring a specific animal to your town. The animals that show up at the campsite are random and cannot be pressured into staying if you already have 10 inhabitants. Past installments used to have a mechanic where speaking to other players' animals could encourage them to pack up and leave their town and show up in yours, but I'm not sure if it's still there.

It can happen, but it's pretty easy to dissuade them if you're the person that owns the original town. Also, you can bring specific animals to a town, it's just a little on the complicated side.

Basically, when someone is due to move in, or you're 9/10 and just after a camper leaves, you start every day by making a new character and checking for house plots or a camper, and then building the new character's house and saving when you confirm there isn't. You delete that character, and keep repeating the procedure up until day 6 and 7. On day 6 there's a roughly 80% chance that the tent will load with someone, or a plot will show up, and 100% on day 7. Once you get to those days you just keep making new characters and force quitting out if you don't like the person in the plot/tent. Once you do, you save as usual.

There are some minor catches to it though, once you have one of every personality type it'll pull one at random, so it can take a hell of a while to get a second Snooty or a second Cranky villager. The other thing is that once it picks a personality type, it continues to pull from a list of about 16-18 of those types of villagers for that day, so you can end up with a pool of that type you don't want.

Other than that though, it's a really great way to get specific people.

I don't consider these types of methods when talking about Animal Crossing. This is a game that is fun to me because I have the discipline not to abuse the (obviously abusable) mechanics like mule characters, resetting, fucking up your island, time-travel, etc. The game becomes not fun at all to me when exploited. It's like Survival Mode vs Creative Mode Minecraft.

Did you really just lump cutting down trees on an island and digging holes in the ground into the same category as time travelling?

Yeah, I did. They are both up there with resetting the game until you get what you want.

I (and others, I'm sure) like to play this particular game the way it was intended to be played, despite being incredibly easy to do otherwise. If you think they intended players to dig holes everywhere and cut down trees to eliminate spawn points to make hunting easier to speed up income... then we're at an impasse.

So if someone cuts down the trees because they just don't want them there, that becomes acceptable even though it just happens to make certain things spawn more often? Come on now.

    edit:

I'm gonna go ahead and continue here a little bit. I'm not disputing the fact that resetting for villager move-ins is an exploitation of the way the game loads data. But it's sure as hell a lot more efficient than spending 2 years and a lot of RNG dice rolls to try and get someone you don't hate in town. Cutting down trees though? That's up there with saying that capping haste in XI is cheating because that wasn't the way the gear was designed to be used.

I'm against time-travelling to speed things up, but calling cutting down trees and digging holes the equivalent of cheating? I'm not game to let that kind of comment slide by.

I have to agree with Rokku on the island/holes... though I can at least understand where you are coming from Mioko. Clearcutting is always frowned upon. =P

I liken it in Animal Crossing more as an option or a choice not an abuse or an exploit. I see time travel as an exploit, with clear repercussions in some cases (rotting turnips if you travel backwards with them). I don't see Beetles as cheating though, I just don't. Hell, even Reggie tells you to do it! =P

    @ 38s

In the end though, your game, your rules. I am sure no one here is saying that isn't the case, but I don't really want to see this topic go from helpful and well... lighthearted fun into a debate on how this game should be played.

I just don't find it fun to sacrifice aesthetics just to mindlessly grind bells. I know clear-cutting to reduce possible spawn locations is probably one of the least offensive of abused mechanics, but it just takes away from the fun for me.

Getting a badass animal is great, but getting a shitty animal and making their life a living hell is part of what draws me to Animal Crossings. RNG is part of the game. It's not like the randomness negatively affects your ability to advance your town by any noticable amount.

I'm not really playing this game to win... if you catch my drift.

I catch your drift. I do. This game is a lot of zen for a lot of people in a lot of ways. It is actually pretty impressive when you really look at what this game does... for 365+ days.

I am extremely unhappy today, as I thought I had tossed my 3DS in my bag on my way to work, but I had not. It is the first time a workday has been started without it. It does not feel ok.

For those who may care, Isabelle tweeted Nintendo's official Dream Address (5700–2038–6151). Plenty of ridiculousness around their town, golden roses, four-leaf clovers, shrubs fucking everywhere, gyroids littering the ground, resident Mario and Luigi (with appropriate interior design), etc.

A shame you can't take anything home. Pretty much just a big photo-op.

I sort of agree with Mioko... I will be taking the good and bad that comes with the game. I started knowing nothing about it, made my character based on the options I wanted to choose when talking to Rover, selected the first layout that seemed alright, and settled for the villagers I got. There is nothing for me to win or lose - it's more of experiencing what the game has to offer and not rushing anything.
Everyone is allowed to play however they want so there is no wrong answer.

Has anyone figured out what the optimal placement for trees are? I'm looking to build an orchard and want to fit in as many trees as possible, but I'm hearing mixed things about what conditions will wilt newborns. So far it seems like trees need at least one free space in each direction, but when people try planting a square pattern with 1 space in between:

    T T T
    T T T
    T T T

The middle tree dies. I'm concerned what happens then if you try and expand out that square... Maybe staggered rows avoid this?

I think all/most "structures" in the game require more space on the top than on the other 3 sides, to keep things better spaced out vertically (the viewpoint makes vertical spacing a necessity).

I believe trees need something like this to grow:

    Code:
     S
    SSS
    S*S
    SSS
    * = tree
    S = empty space

So, I believe those most compact, staggered rows could work like:

    Code:
      S S S S
    SSSSSSSSSSS
    SS*S*S*S*SS
    SSSSSSSSSSS
    S*S*S*S*S*S
    SSSSSSSSSSS

Mio's right. The middle tree dies because it's considered too close to/in the shadow of the other trees. If you're spacing them out to maximize, that pattern of staggered rows is one of the best. The only thing I'm not 100% sure on is the necessity of the extra spaces to the extreme north of the line.

Do you have any friends who work at gamestop? Apparently all the gamestop employees in my region coordinate together with that shit.
