The NHL may be pushing for a team in Seattle sooner rather than later.

According to Seattle sports radio station KJR 950, commissionery Gary Bettman is encouraging the league’s board of governors to make an expansion team available to the city.

The cost of the new club would be approximately $275 million. The team would begin play in the 2014-15 season.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told reporters last week the Pacific Northwest is “going to get serious consideration” the next time franchise shifting or adding comes to the forefront.

In June, reports surfaced suggesting that if the latest attempt to sell the Phoenix Coyotes failed, relocating the franchise to Seattle was Plan B for the NHL.

“I’m not sure if we ever really addressed Seattle as a specific alternative in that process,” Daly said, “but I think it’s safe to say that we’re very intrigued by the Pacific Northwest, generally.”

Bettman, however, has had a meeting with Seattle mayor Mike McGinn about the possibility of bringing an NHL team to the city.

“I let him know of the situation here, and that we were supportive of bringing the NHL to Seattle,” McGinn told NBC affiliate King 5 in mid-June. “We have Key Arena, so we talked about the potential of them being in Key Arena while we continue to work on a new arena plan.”

Key Arena would only be a temporary home for any NHL team in Seattle. The city has a deal in place with investor Chris Hansen to build a new arena that hinges on an NBA franchise coming to the city. Hansen, however, previously indicated he would be open to breaking ground if the first tenant were to be an NHL team.

Lets make this happen. Friends in Duvall down there desperately want some hockey games.

I'm game for some Fantsay Hockey if there's room. I don't know why everyone's so strung up on ESPN though, I always preffered CBSsports.com, least for FB anyways. I assume their hockey is the same format, but I'd play ESPN. Just shoot me a PM if there's room.

Would be cool to see Seattle get a team soon. Need to make it 16 teams a conference eventually.. even if it means two bottom-feeding expansion teams in the West for a while. Would be interesting to see Vancouver with a close geographic rival too.

The problem is that Seattle's deal right now is set up for an NBA team to come first, and no one is sure if everyone will agree to change that if an NHL team is available first. Everyone here wants the Sonics back, it's unclear what level of fervor the city would have for an NHL team.

The main guy for the arena project is behind the NBA team, so financing a project that doesn't get him what he wants immediately is a nebulous proposition.

That's kinda good to hear, I could generally care less about the NBA but as a sports fan in general the whole deal with the Sonics was gut-wrenching to watch unfold
