People compare it like NYI with Streit to Taveras. Gives you an extra year or 2 to give him time to be fully ready.

Should've just given the fucking C to Smytty. Sure it's 15 years too late for it to matter, but just as an interim thing like "This is yours for a year, then it's Hallsy's. Better late than never, enjoy your Captaincy role." as opposed to Ference getting it because "He won a cup, he has winning experience. blah blah blah."
The team might come close to 500 this year... maybe - neither captain choices would make or break anything, so may as well give the fans their chance to see Smyth with a C on his chest, since we were calling for it long before it went to Sloth Horcoff.
