This is what happens when you can't tack on extra years at the end of contracts to bring the cap hit down.

Giroux at 8.5m will be perfectly normal for the cap environment. We saw the first of the "superstar" contracts with Getzlaf and Perry (8.25, 8.625) and the trend will continue. Filppula (a 40-60 point center) is looking for 5.5m long term, Clarkson and Horton 6.0m longterm. Grabovski got 5.5 mid-term, and while it was an overpayment it wasn't a huge one. Bickell just got 4m and he's never cracked 40 points.

Especially with the cap set to go up pretty quickly in the next few seasons, we will see big contracts and cap hits, and ones signed recently like Crosby's will most likely look like a steal around the time he is 30.

If he continues to have a season like he did a few years ago, constantly 8.5M is fair. However I don't see him being that type of player due to his stupidity and size. 7-7.5M would have been more appropriate. The length of the contract is okay.
