You have 5.7 M Cap room AND ONLY 18 PLAYERS SIGNED. You need 23 players. 14 Forwards, 7 Defensemen, 2 goalies. 12 Forwards play, 6 D men play, 2 goalies play each night. 3 are backups for injury, etc. You have to make the remaining 5 players signed average 1.1 apiece. Aka you only sign shitty fringe, barely-in-the-league bottom line guys from here on out. You were THAT. FUCKED. with the salary cap that even after clearing out those contracts you're still in this predicament.

Yeah, I'm positively baffled. Three months ago Iginla's all "lolBoston", now suddenly it's The Place To Be (after Columbus) and for $6 fucking million?

I'm just cringing to see what else happens to free up space for Rask, because if Iginla waltzes on in and gets $6m upfront, then Rask knows he has to be able to get an average of $7m, and we just don't have the room for that plus filling in all the other gaps.

I'm sure we still have to pay him but if he's not on the roster you don't have the salary cap problem, right?

That's not how it works. Teams can't "deactivate" him, they can buy him out or trade him to get rid of his cap hit. In this case though, he will go on LTIR as soon as the season starts, which allows cap relief equal to his cap hit. It is not the same as his cap hit not counting, but in many ways it is the same. The important thing is that that amount + the bonus portion of Iginla's contract which can be rolled over in to the next season means that the Bruins should have roughly enough for Rask right now.

Nonis got canned in Vancouver after the owner asked him what his plan was to rebuild the Canucks when they failed to make the playoffs in 07. Apparently his plan was pretty bad but at the time I wasn't sure if it was just an overly opinionated owner or not but now maybe he was onto something. Outside of trading for Luongo I never liked most of his moves.
