Honestly, taking Kovalchuk's example, Luongo could "retire" for a year, penalize Vancouver for so many years, and then come back at a small fee to the team that resigns him, no? I mean, it's an extreme option, but it's an option

capgeek had a thing for kovalchuck's retiring that calculated the cap hit for Devils. Is there something like that for finding out how much Luongo's cap hit would be if he retired?

edit: nvm, it's called recapture calculator. If Luongo retires, Canucks take a 825k cap hit...

I hope it doesn't turn into more drama fest really.
I mean, part of me would want to be like "I'm reporting to the team tomorrow." *accidentally on purpose sleep in* "I'll be there soon." *Miss the cab to the airport* as a "Don't worry, we'll trade you." payback. But there's still plenty of time really for him to think it over in the summer, so everything can change in that amount of time.
The biggest difference between him and Ilya is that Roberto can't fake a retirement to know he's got $9859043859803458035 waiting for him tomorrow to play in the Strombone Hockey League

I agree with yea there. It could go sour really fast, but if you put his position into prospective, he's now the undisputed number 1 on a decent team, he's making bank, he's got a new coach who really likes him, his terrible GM will probably be gone in a year, there aren't too many negatives with staying in Vancouver.

But since they are trying to find a new owner it's harder without real star players ( parise gone last yeah kovalchuck this year and brodeur at the end of the year or next year)
