Late October 2003, yes. Rage was somewhere between 2006-2007 I can't remember exactly, but I remember Merits being introduced for some reason. (which was after NA PS2 release, which was the worst thing to ever happen as I recall)

NIN gear didn't change much in that time frame. Turban, cerb mantle, (if after ToAU was out) and brutal earring are the only gear changes I could have seen myself sporting over that time frame in regards to the gear I was wearing

If you want to claim it as a victory, you're more then welcome to. I'm sure most people here who were camping the kings for that entire time frame (2003-whatever) will probably get a lot of dates wrong.

It honestly wasn't that hard to search, took me a couple mins.

In 2006, highly possible to solo tank with your gear and no gearswap. Not completely sure about 2004 but most likely possible if not time-consuming since you could take your sweet ass time back then due to lack of rage timers.

While my memory has some gaps, I'm pretty sure easily defeated endgame HNM on NIN in 2004 without seriously trying and achieved LV75 NIN two years later would stick out.

Particularly if NIN was my second LV75 job.

edit: Here is the picture you said to find as "proof." Unless Tarenwebber is a meleeing WHM, you didn't even solo tank that.

If you were solo tanking fafhogg /war you wouldn't have been holding hate over any DDs at all, so it either would have raged or they would have pulled off of you

The only way for a NIN tank to hold hate off of BLMs and the SCing DDs on fafhogg is the old /drk or /brd setup with enmity gear, Arhat's etc

there was no such thing as nin /brd/drk when i played back in 03-05. nin/war was very common and they were decent tanks back then. We used thfs for nin to hold hate(something I havent seen this new age of ff xi players do in years). What you guys dont get is the game was not this zerg fest as it is now back then. it played alot slower, kills took longer, unless you had incredible gear which was hard to get because of bad drop rates and everyone in ls basically wanting the same gear. we would sc+MB to kill almost everything back then, so that meant you just didnt spam your tp as DD do now. the game is played so much different now then it was played back then. when i came back in 2010 this didn't not feel like ff xi to me cause the ff xi of 03-05 is played NOTHING like it is played now. our ls used have nin and pld tanks and we would use them for EVERYTHING. If the PLD wasn't on we would use nin's. We even had nin solo tank faf. Back then I used to see full 18 people american alliances wipe to faf then 8-9 japanese come in and kill him.

I can't remember if Utsusemi blocked Hurricane Wing back in the old days (I know it used to block some AoEs.) Might have been more feasible if it did. Slow and Elegy weren't hard to land on it either, my LS used a lot of Earthen Ward back in the days too. I don't know.

i actually prefered nin tanks over pld back then because nin shadows absorbed everything. also as you pointed out enfeebling magic actually worked back then. paralyze, blind, slow, silence etc. alot of the times the only reason we would wipe to fafnir was because someone targeted one of the flys in zone while fighting fafnir and they would link causing us to wipe.

Shadows used to only lose 1 shadow from AoE. They changed it in 05 if I had to guess. Maybe sooner.

I think they also added in hate decay when you lost a shadow at the same time along with arhat's set in that patch.

I feel like I was compelled to come to these forums and post here but assuming nin/war, until turban came around, (unless you had Panzer+1/dusk+1/speed MAYBE), it was not efficient to tank as you'd need just about the same support as a war/nin tanking it as far as buff numbers go. The golden number was 28+/-1 when the monster was slowed and its acc was 85%+~. Without appropriate gear you could not have reached the golden number and maintained any more efficiency than a war/nin. However with Gear considerations (turban/swift or panzar+1/speed and then obviously the best of both) you were given the ability to change one haste song to an evasion song. At that point, you would be providing a unique tanking job that, under the same battle strategies (TAing the war or nin tank, hate control, and hate/hp management), would be incredibly efficient. I've been drinking but my time machine still works! I may be wrong about certain specifics but the point im trying to make should be clear enough.

So YES it could have been done definately,

Considering I don't recognize half the people in my 7 year old pic, you're only reinforcing to me that I probably did some brain damage to myself in college, oh well. Still good enough for a government job!

That said, if I cared so much about being right on the internet, I probably wouldn't have told people exactly where to go to potentially prove me wrong. I said that there was probably a pic of it on that thread you spent an hour reading in the middle of the night. So I was wrong about the pic, congratz you won an argument on the internet.

I know I've solo tanked faf on NIN multiple times (and the people agree that its possible) but since I can't prove it to the almighty Spider-Dan, I'll just pinch off and let him bask in the aroma of victory.
