The ram is a fucking pain to breed. I'm at 109.5 bonecraft and slowly rising... it's sad that I'll probably hit 110 before I can even get my godamn sheep to evolve. I've fed 2.5-3 stacks of great moss now, even experimenting on mules and never getting a squirm message. I've resorted to torturing baby sheeps on 3 different mules, maybe a little pain and suffering will scar them through adulthood.
Well if you don't get the squirm message maybe that isn't really the right food?
I'm not gonna doubt that great moss is the evolution food since the only people who claim to have gotten their sheep to evolve say it is. I still think there is a trick, it can't just be all luck. So far, my only lead is Hitou's post:
In my experiences, if you spam feed a fresh pet an evolution food (i.e. red moko grass or san'dorian carrot to baby rabbits) it takes longer for them to evolve to the point of them evolving due to Personal Growth. It's happened a few times, last I can think of is when I tried to raise a Ziz spam feeding nothing but Quus. When I fed a combination of foods (yagudo cherry x2 > Red moko grass x3), I was able to evolve a white rabbit with 5 feedings.
Here's something interesting, if you set your parenting style to Living in the moment... you don't get the squirm message. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I've fed nearly a whole stack of rotten meat to a baby lizard with this setting, a whole stack of lesser chigoes to a baby eft and never got a squirm message, and the pets are still clearly infants (they're still really small).
idk just saying isn't the whole squirming thing the indication it's an evolution food?
Anyways interesting about the whole swapping though personally it's been completely random for me. I've literally had one evolve after feeding the evolution food twice and that's it while on a mule starting at the same time with the same pet, feeding it the same thing, with the same interactions took 2.5-3 weeks to evolve <.< longer than anything I've ever done on my main. On the pet before on my main that I swapped up took me about 1.5 weeks which is one of the longer ones for it
No idea about living in the moment thing though
I just got the lizard to evolve today with one feeding of rotten meat >_> (i changed it to personal growth yesterday and also fed it a rotten meat also). I'm not even sure if you can evolve your pet if you keep it in 'living the moment', unless it's like xx amount of feeding. I gave up after a stack lol
Are there any mini-guides to monster rearing? This topic has too many pages for searching them to be pleasant, and I'm interested in getting the White Rabbit Cheer.
Sheep evolved into a Ram. I farmed a bunch of Great Boyahda Moss for it. Need to wait until the white sheep is very large before you feed it, do NOT feed the moss when it's small or you'll waste it.
Got the KI, retired it, and the Moogle now sells me Ram Skins. Seems when you get a KI or retire the monster, your Moogle perma sells the items? Cause I have a White Rabbit and I can buy Flax Flower, Windy Tea Leaves, Imperial Tea Leaves, Ram Skins and Rabbit Hides.
@Fwahm: http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Monster_Rearing
Yeah, KI unlocks the item forever from the moogle.
So... I JUST now sent my first monster to The Farm...
Had Schmooples the rarab since day1.................
35,350g
Is that the cap? Is there a cap?
Thought I'd share what happens with... Months of care.
So I've been trying to level unlock cheers on a mule and I haven't yet but somehow despite the fact I haven't and can't get the mementos I'm still occasionally unlocking buyables. kinda weird
You can get the KI for the memento without having rank 2/ unlocking the quest. Did you check your KI list to see if you got any?
Ahh thanks Kain, that's what I planned on doing.... just letting it age over time because that's what Hitou's sister did. Gonna keep feeding it boyahda moss and cabbage until then... but it doesn't really matter since:

Guess it's nice to have the memento when they raise the cap?!!?
Couple things of note from the update that I didn't see in the actual update notes. There's 3 stars when you check your monster now indicating growth level. I guess that means how big it is? I donno, I have a sapling with 3 stars on one char and another with 2 stars. Obviously neither is an adult yet. Also the pond is now really clear looking. There's possibly other aesthetic changes I didn't notice yet too. That one just stuck out to me cause it was usually still kinda green at rank 7.
I'm pretty disappointed lizard molts dont come from a lizard or grey lizard memento right now, could easily spam the new Cp mantles if it weren't for the low supply of molts. Time to raise 10 lizard pets and milk them XD.
Edit, I thought I was balls tripping about my pond being so clean. Interesting, didn't notice the stars things.
Is the KI from Zenicca, "Sakura and the Magic Spoon", just something that becomes available after doing Monster Rearing for a certain amount of time or are there other requirements? I'm sort of unclear how one gets to the point of using cheers.
From 1 page ago (and also the December Patch Notes from FFXI website)
Incase it isn't clear, KI from Zenicca becomes available at Rank 2 Monster Rearing when the quest activates.
I'm gonna guess you need a fully grown adult pet (with 3 full stars, thanks SE) to hit rank 2 and be able to buy the KI. I've just started mog gardens on 2 mules a few weeks ago and got them to rank 5 in everything, still haven't been able to buy KI yet. I've been experimenting with monster rearing though by setting them to 'living in the moment', so they haven't been maturing as fast.
