Do you mean beaming + KI, or just KI? I know for a fact I got the Ram KI one day after it evolved, so for KI it's as soon as one day for evolved ones at least. I can't say about how often you can get the beaming status, but I know that most of the time my pets are at max happiness (bursting with joy as you can see in a couple of the screenshots I posted). Since they made new pets not succumb to darkness, I don't think I've had a single pet fall to it because I'm usually aiming for the best/strong interactions, and I copied you and don't harvest from them until a few days after (assuming it helps with evolution rate idk).

I started baby uragnite and sea monk on day of update, with max possible strongly resonating actions up to now. Fed baby uragnite meat + three eyed fish to evolve, meat since it turned into limbasca. Still sitting at 1 star growth, never beaming, no KI. Sea monk won't even evolve, has been beaming several times. Been feeding it denizansi for a while, the past 3 days while it was at 3/3 star growth, always squirms (so I assume it isn't the other adult form?). Been collecting items from both since day 3 or 4.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this system really that random?

Just bad luck. You can tell if the Sea Monk has grown up by whether the stars have gone back down to nothing or not. You can also set the parenting style to "living in the moment" to keep it from naturally growing into a regular Adult Sea Monk. Getting KI from Limbasca is just gonna be random, keep at it.

    Did you check rearing style?

They're both on personal growth, I've never changed it off that for any monsters.

And yeah the stars never reset on the sea monk, that's why I thought it was still a baby. It definitely got bigger thou.

EDIT: Does it matter which monster is 'active'? I can see it just being bad luck with the limbasca KI, but the sea monk (inactive) not evolving for this long seems weird, especially when it's mood/growth have been completely maxed for several days.

It's random but SE never really said what priority does so it's highly possibly that the one with priority gets a bigger effect from rearing style

So I start to raise a new cock on a mule and it automatically names it Brutus. Ides of march coming up.... coincidence? I think not. Especially not with that weird german name it recently gave me Sternenschweif

Can you change which one is prioritized between feedings?

Yes actually what I've been doing mostly out of laziness (no zoning yay) but I doubt it does anything

You do run a slight risk of it growing up into the default adult form if you leave it on Personal Growth and the squirm food never kicks in, but only at 3 stars and even then it'll take a few days. Probably a bigger deal if it was a Baby Uragnite since Three-eyed Fish are like 80k now haha. The babies do get bigger by the day, which is why I'm glad they added the stars so you can tell for sure if it actually grows up.

    It might be that.
And I think I begin to suspect you're 100% right about it because of my recent raptor experience:

Have uragnite and raptor babies, both at 1full 1empty, so I decide to further test my 2full+ suspicion.
Give both alternate evolution food, both squirm, and both do not evolve when full zoning.
Next day uragnite is at 2 full, give it a three eyed fish, full zone, and voila. White uragnite.
Yesterday, raptor (in the off slot) is at 2 full now, give it a cockatrice meat, it squirms, full zone, nothing.
If today it's still at 2 full and not at 2 full 1 empty, I'll swap it with the uragnite and feed it then...
If it turns red, then that means one of two things:
    1) alternate/normal evolution can only happen in the main slot.
    2) my raptor was a poopyhead and didn't wanna be red right at 2. (This could also be a case if it is 2/1 today. It would either mean raptors don't poof until 2/1 or that mine just wanted to be fatter. Still have yet to see anything evolve with less than 2full. So I am confident in that theory.)

OK, about this two star stuff. My dhalmel calf grew up in slot 2 on 2/20 from feeding. I got it on 2/17 (first day available). There's no way it was 2 stars unless it grew to 1 star on 2/18, 1.5 stars on 2/19, and 2 stars on 2/20.

I had a cockatrice and sheep evolve by time even though I was feeding it the evolution food since day 3 or 4 when they started squirming (other food before that). My karakul when this was first released evolved on day 3 or 4. Evolving isn't guaranteed via food. It can happen the first time, or it might be stubborn and not evolve at all.

The adult dhalmel is still at 2 stars though, no squirm from papaka grass, though it might be batagreens that evolve it again since that also mentions dhalmels in the description.

The baby crab thinks any fish / meat is not worthless, but none of them have made it squirm. It stares off for faerie apples. JP wiki lists angry at ahriman tears and la theine cabbage.

I just had sea monk evolve to the blue/white one in alternate slot, it just took forever (fourth day I think at 3/3 stars).

Yeah it can definitely still evolve in that slot but seems like it might have some higher requirement/lower odds

Random name generator named my uragnite Ailbeche, which you can see evolved from the 3 eyed fish feeding. The only monster I could not evolve with less than 2 stars (and an empty one at that) was rams. Different species could have less strict evolution though.

Some things fill stars faster than others. So unless you're checking... Then you can't say it wasn't 2+ stars.
Also, sometimes food will increase growth faster than a normal growing... So your disbelief in your monster's growth is misplaced. Even more so because I've had monsters grow a whole star on the first day. (My bitchy raptor I forgot to switch to enjoy the moment so I could get the baby KI, had grown a whole filled in star by the second day, so it's not as impossible as you may think.)
    Especially since you weren't checking.

Unlike Magitek, who not only was checking, but also provided a screenshot. (Which wasn't needed for me to believe, but is helpful for evidence.)
So thank you, Magitek. Now the threshold is 2stars.

My previously mentioned raptor is now 2/1, so I'm inclined to believe Magitek and Dasva in that species are all unique and that sometimes you'll just get a little bitchy monster.
Stupid raptor squirming and not turning red....
