Twitch Receives $20 Million in Funding

Popular video game streaming service Twitch recently announced that is has received an additional $20 million in funding from investors. The news comes during a time when Twitch is poised to expand to the console market via integration with both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Twitch currently has 45 million unique viewers per month and expects that number to increase with the launch of the aforementioned next-gen systems. The investments will most likely be used to grow Twitch’s current infrastructure.

Twitch’s servers are at times unable to meet the demand, and the additional funding should allow Twitch to deal with this as well as the expected increase in demand brought upon by the integration Sony and Microsoft’s upcoming consoles.

The funding itself came from a Series C round of investments led by Thrive Capital. Among the investors was game publisher Take-Two Interactive.

Seriously. I had no idea how much better the stream quality is on YouTube until recently. I was trying to watch the LOL world championships on Twitch, and it was stuttering, and kept bumping itself down to 360p because it said my 90Mb+ connection was lacking bandwidth. Switched over to the YT stream, and was running HD flawlessly and with DVR functionality that Twitch lacks. All Twitch has is chat, and I instantly turn that off every time I turn a stream on.

Completely agreed. I can't wait for the mass switch over to YT streaming once Twitch gets completely fucked on the release of XBone and PS4, time will tell but I doubt $20 mil will fix their incompetency.

This was my experience previously as well. However youtube has the timeshift technology that you can rewind the stream like a DVR... it's pretty godlike.

What difference does it make if something runs 5 seconds behind if you are only watching Youtube. The viewer will never know a difference, correct?

Sort of if you're watching by yourself, for me it was one of the E3 things I was watching and doing BG chat, and everyone was like OH HOLY SHIT way before me each time lol

The same thing happens with twitch depending on how you view it. If I'm watching something on my computer and change it up to my Roku to see on TV, the Roku one is usually a good 5-10 seconds behind.
