EVO 2014: Euro will never Top 8

Not in that context, but they were going to put big money into the EVO and EVO qualifiers for 2014, and now it seems like a cancelled deal. More will probably come out soon.

Yeah, while I do think without Sony as a sponsor EVO would use more normally accepted standards for games(Capcom on 360, everything else on PS3), it's a larger loss than it'd even initially look like. Without Sony providing consoles(fwiw I don't think they did this year, just last year), EVO would have to rely on something like FocusFire, so on top of losing whatever money Sony would put in, they'd also lose the extra overhead to pay FF's fees. And I really, really doubt they could convince MS to step in to replace Sony, especially seeing as how the MS logo got booed to shit during the KI exhibition this year.

The one that scares me is the rumor of Capcom pulling money and/or streaming permissions. If they pull permissions, Aver's probably out as well because it's hard to advertise streaming products when the two largest games of the genre would be ruled out; it might make a bit of a snowball. Hopefully that one's just all boogeyman bullshit. I do fully believe Capcom JP is dense enough to not consider streaming/yt videos as free advertising and pulling the plug on it like Nintendo tried to.

Main thing out of all of this is that if you're trying to play fighting games for money, and not just to be the best, and legitimately think that is sustainable over just getting a real job to support your play/travel, looooooooooooool.

I think it's a combination of them realizing the market of hardcore gamers is smaller than the FGC tried to make it seem, and this being icing on the cake.

while i do agree with this, i wouldn't rule it out 100%. did you see their giant clusterfuck of mobile/social gaming announcements yesterday? if nothing else, capcom have repeatedly shown in very recent times that they have absolutely no qualms over telling plenty of their hardcore fans to get fucked, lol

That's because hardcore gamers aren't really all that profitable compared to casuals, not remotely as close as what they think they are. If you added up all of the individual people who attended US majors this year, you'd probably get what, 10k? 15k maybe? That's out of probably around 3 million units of total sales for all games involved combined.

Same as any other genre, the hardcore players are not the ones you need to cater to, because they're going to buy your product regardless. You need to cater to the other 99% who might not buy your product otherwise.

Disagree. Competitive games need to show the public (yes, the casuals) that the game is competitive, otherwise nobody will see the point in buying it. About the only game I can think of that's exempt from this is Smash, people would buy that regardless.
